Brian K. Shaffer Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 If you have access to any golf course ponds near your home, and you are willing to dodge golf balls.. this is certainly an idea to pursue. I have caught carp up to 30lbs.. all on fly. Mainly wets, though I have had a few flies eaten on the surface by big Carp that I couldnt hold on to. Have you tried it ? Would you try it ? let me know screaming reels - Brian Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.
Members fish hunter Posted December 28, 2005 Members Posted December 28, 2005 Heck yes I have!! Hard to beat sight fishing to a carp. As for the fight, better hang on!! That whole pound for pound saying.
Seth Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 Common or Grass??? I take it your talking about grass carp. I have tried to catch grass carp on a fly rod but never got any to take. These fish were pushing 50lbs probably. I shot one with my bowfishing rig that weighed 45lbs. I've watched them do it on TV and it just looks like a total blast. I know carp sure do put up a heckuva fight on regular fishing tackle, even the small ones.
Members macfish Posted January 29, 2006 Members Posted January 29, 2006 macfish here. Brain, I'm new to the forum but not to fishing or fly fishing though it's been a few years since I have done much fly fishing. I have been targeting mostly carp over the last 18 months or so and done pretty well using mainly what are called hair rigs (a European way of getting carp hooked with less effort), packbait on a method feeder and boilies. These are all pretty much European innovations except for the packbait which is an American bait. I'm hoping this year to get the fly rod up and trying for carp on it. Most of our streams up this way tend to be pretty muddy/silty so I'm not sure I can sight cast to the fish. Of course I've heard that potato chips make a good chum and if the carp are hungry for them and get feeding on them then I could cast to the feeders on the surface. I see this thread goes back to January 6th so it may not get many responses. We'll see. Jonathan

gonefishin Posted January 30, 2006 Posted January 30, 2006 What kind of fly do you use to entice a carp into biting it? Maybe chum with corn and use yellow foam or something? Bud I would rather be fishin'. "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote." Benjamin Franklin, 1759
