TroutRinger Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 My uncle's neighbor is selling a 14' canoe for $225. I'm not sure what kind it is, but my uncle said it is in very good condition. I have only ever used 16-17' canoes on day floats from outfitters. This one would be mostly for use on Springfield Lake and one or two float trips a year on the Jacks Fork or similar rivers. I'm hoping it would be big enough to comfortably hold two people, full size cooler, dry bucket, tackle box, and a couple fishing rods for a day float trip, but small enough for me to solo paddle at Lake Springfield or small coves at LOZ (have a kayak but like to stand up when I fish). Finally, will a 14 footer be transportable in a short bed truck diagonally with the tailgate down? "Of all the liars among mankind, the fisherman is the most trustworthy." fishinwrench Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 I have an Old Town guide 147 that I love for a solo. It's heavy and doesn't track all that well, but it is stable at drift and it's roomy. Probably the best canoe in the world for a guy and a dog. It will get 2 average sized guys down the river, but not very comfortably.
MeatintheFreezer Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 I have a short bed with a tool box, so with the tailgate down I have 6' of bed. I bought a 14' caneo the other day and hauled it home in the truck. It didn't look 'to' ridiculous hanging out the back. Of course I did have to use straps to hold the nose down and secure it in place. I can't speak about how ti floats, but mine appears to have plenty of room for the items you mentioned above. Remember - If at first you DO succeed, try not to act surprised & quit while you're ahead.
Chief Grey Bear Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 I personally think a 14' is too short for a tandam for fishing. If you were just floating and enjoying the day with your significant other, then yes you could get away with it. It would make a nice solo set up and it sounds like a great price. I would maybe even say go ahead and get it. If you find you don't like it as much as you thought you would, you can always sell it and most likey for more than you paid. Nothing looks ridiculous.....Except my jonboat sticking out of my ford escort..As long as you get it to the water..thats all that matters..

Most of the time, I would be the only one fishing. My girlfriend just likes being on the water. I have considered just trying it a few times because I think you're right that I could resell it for at least what I paid so not much to lose. Wayne SW/MO Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 The biggest problem I've seen with going tandem is that front passenger is cramped. I never found them bad enough to pass, but I'm only 5'7". If it's decent you wouldn't have any problem getting your money back. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Jack Jones Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 Blue...you give me hope. As a driver of a Ford Focus, I know see nothing is impossible, LOL. What size is your jon boat? blue79 Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 i think it was 12ft.i traded a chainsaw for it and made a base for a seat that just set above the top of the boat.i took the back seat cushion out of the car and the seat backs folded down flat and the boat slid in all the way against the front seats. That was the best little cheap boat i ever had.I was on the Lamar city lake or muddy creek every day i wasnt working.I sold that boat for $150 without the battery and no title. Then i moved to Stockton and got bigger and better boats but theres times i wish i still had that one.
drew03cmc Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 I carried my Disco 133k home in my S10 with gate down and didn't have a problem. That will haul two folks around sufficiently. If you will, what boat is it? Andy
