Members Dman Posted March 6, 2014 Members Posted March 6, 2014 Hello, I'm planning my first trip to the Current for some kayak/fishing and camping and would like to get some advice from you all. I plan on fishing a lot and camping overnight so a trip of 8-10 miles is a good distance range to start with. As for the fishing, if I had to choose between rainbows and browns I'd lean towards targeting browns. Any ideas and suggestions will be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Dman
Gene K Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Your own kayaks or renting? If your own, start as far up the river as the water level would allow. Right now Tan Vat would be fine to start at. TV to Cedar would be close to 8 miles.
Ham Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 With the flow the Current has, I'd target 12 plus miles a day, but we get started earlier and fish later than most. Besides, I'm fishing for smallies in the fall. DRAG your feet you can easily make up 4 miles an hour if need be. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish

Did you suggest starting at Tan Vat because the water level is low?
Gene K Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 Tan Vat is as high as you can go to put in. It's pretty much at the park. Make up 4 miles in an hour on the upper current? Ham must be an olympian. I routinely put in at Baptist and float to Parker, stopping to fish along the way. That's just short of a 4-1/2 mile float and I spend ~4 hours, sometimes more if the fishing is good.
Ham Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 I've NEVEr been up that high on the river. I've only been on the Current from the confluence with JF to Van Buren. There's plenty of flow down there, but no knowledge of upper river at all. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
Gavin Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 Tan Vat to Cedar is a good day float, but it's a brown trout fishery. Early and late is the name of that game. Best done overnight. Head below Round Spring if you want to fish for bass.
Gene K Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 BTW, I met Gavin a few years ago. He kind of changed my paradigm on trout fishing on the Current, and that's after 25+ years of fly fishing the parks and blue ribbon areas. Thanks, Gavin. Dude knows his stuff.
