Al Agnew Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 MItch couldn't go today. CWC couldn't either. But what the heck, I like fishing by myself anyway. Just the facts... Fished from 10 AM to 6 PM. Sunny, windy, 48 degrees at the start, got downright hot. Water low, visibility 4-6 feet, temps 46 degrees at the start, got up to about 51. Fished the good looking spots in about 8 miles of river. Used hair jigs, jerkbaits (Pointer 78 SP, modified clown color), crankbaits (Norman Middle N, with dressing). Fished mostly in and around wintering pools, but also some other spots with a bit more current. Caught 30 smallmouth, 4 largemouth, 3 spotted bass. Caught the most fish on hair jigs, including the biggest largemouth, a 17 incher. However, other than that most of the fish were 11-13 inches. Caught a half dozen around 14 inches, a 16 inch smallie, and the big one of the day was a 19 inch smallie. Caught it late in the afternoon on a shady, rocky bank with moderately slow current in a short pool that always seems to hold a big fish or two this time of year. It came on the crankbait. Saw three eagles and one big tom turkey.

Thanks Finesse jigs and grubs are what pretty well everybody I know uses during the cooler months.
Al Agnew Posted March 12, 2014 Author Posted March 12, 2014 Tubes should be good right now. I've used small (2 inch) tubes in the dead of winter. Maybe I was missing out on fish by not trying tubes or finesse worms or whatever, but when I'm catching fish on something fairly regularly, I don't see much point in changing. The jerkbaits just didn't seem to be interesting many fish. The water was clear enough that I could watch the jerkbait much of the time, and I saw several fish, including one very big shadow that never came up close enough to get a good look at, investigating the jerkbait but refusing it. I think I caught one spotted bass, two largemouth, and one smallie on the jerkbait, and had maybe two more fish take it which I missed.
Seth Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Went on the Gasconade yesterday and the water was 53-56 degrees already! That river warms up fast. All I had to show for my efforts was a few little spotted bass. I did see my first otter though. He was very curious about our boat and kept making a weird noise. It sounded like somebody sticking their tongue out and blowing air out of your mouth. At first I thought it was a beaver!
