hoglaw Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Have a quick question. I need a measurement with callipers of the spool lip diameter. In otherwords, I need the width of the widest point above the line on the spool that the line has to pass over on its way to the guides. Hope someone can help.

hoglaw Posted March 13, 2014 Author Posted March 13, 2014 Do you not understand the question or do you not understand why I'm asking? Hopefully I can get by Cabellas this weekend and check one out. But if anyone has one, I just need the diamater of the spool lip - the widest part of the top of the spool. Hope that is clear.
Ham Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 I've confused why you're using a Shimbindo spinning reel for one thing and wondering why you need to know the dimensions of the spool for another. In the end, I figure it's just some fancy lawyer stuff. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
hoglaw Posted March 13, 2014 Author Posted March 13, 2014 It's not my reel. If it was mine, I'd have one to measure myself! I need the diameter of the spool lip to get started on guide placement for a rod I'm doing for somone, and to see if I have a comparable reel in my stuff to use. In order to set up a spinning rod with micro guides correctly, I need to know what reel is going to be used with it. On the "shimbindo" issue, I'm sure it's been fully hashed out here. I don't have any particular brand loyalties but I have probably owned thirty shimano reels at one point or another. Only once have I ever had an issue with a reel binding up, and it was an older citica that I got off ebay cheap. Turned out the spool in it was actually warped. Replaced the spool and it functions perfectly now. I've never had a single problem from any of my curados or shimano spinning reels. I've never had a high-end shimano spinning reel, but their cheaper ones (<$100) have always worked fine for me.
Ham Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 Shimano makes fine baitcasters. And everybody loves their spinning reels UNTIL they bind up on you. It happened to me twice (two different reels) personally and I've seen it personally with other people's reels on other ocassions. I thought it might be a custom rod deal. I'm always the iconoclast. I not a big fan of micro guides. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
nomolites Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 I have a 1000 and a 2500 but unfortunately they are in my rod locker 174 miles from my current location. My paperwork does not give dimensional info, but I can tell you it is low profile and small diameter compared to most of the competition. Sorry, that's all I got today. (BTW - spooled with braid they perform flawlessly and I am very satisfied with them) Mike
hoglaw Posted March 14, 2014 Author Posted March 14, 2014 I not a big fan of micro guides. I wasn't a big fan of organ meat until I had boudan. Point being, for finesse fishing with a spinning real, you won't know until you try one that's set up properly. That's impossible unless it's custom made. Thanks for the input nomo. That being the case, I'll run up to cabbalas to fit the blank with one or I'll have my buddy ship his to me to get it set up.
Ham Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 Hey Kyle, Do you have a spinning rod custom setup with perfectly placed micro guides? If so, what are the advantages? Have you fished with it much in sub 30 degree air temps? Have you used fluro with it yet? Braid or Nanofil? I hope we can get together and compare notes while we catch a bunch of fish one of these days. I'm always looking for the best gear I can find to fish with. I do have a limit on what I can spend which is higher than Ugly Sticks, but lower than G. Loomis NRX. Millions of fish have been caught on Ugly Sticks and I have been known to catfish with one. Lots of fish caught on G.Loomis, but I generally can't make myself believe they are worth the extra expense. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
Guest Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 I hated Shimbindos for the very reason. They've since fixed the binding problem. Ive had very good success with them in the past 3 years. As for micro guides, Im not a big fan. However, Hoglaw has no problem throwing cigarette butts into gail force winds with his micro guide setups.
