mjk86 Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 I think the lake just gets hit hard by traditional bass fisherman who will occasionally get one as a by catch. I am by no means a musky fisherman....but id try to mimic 5-7inch white crappie (white spinnerbait?) by the dam, 7-9inch largemouth (green pumpkin swimbait?) on the upper end, and 3-5inch sunfish. The lake has shad, but i think they are threadfin as the biggest ive seen are 2inchers. Also the lake gets hit pretty hard by bass and musky fisherman alike....so you gotta think outside the box. Those muskys have probably seen every bucktail spinner and giant stick bait ever made.
Geoff Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Which is why Im fly fishing it. I don't think those fish have seen much in the way of flies for them, but maybe they have. Obviously the one I had follow was interested. I have a big crappie fly that I tied as well but got no interest in. Most of my flies are in the 7-13" range for them. mjk86 Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 I think your right about the flies....ive never seen anyone fly fishing....just hurling huge in-lines. Good luck! With flies that big, id say your going after the big ones in the lake. I hope you catch one!!
Geoff Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 I don't really care what size it is, I just want to catch one haha. The fly I have tied I can scale it down in size if need be. So I might need to do that as well. I think Im also going to tie in a few just random colors, maybe chartruse and white as well. Members badger88 Posted April 4, 2014 Members Posted April 4, 2014 I went out to 35 on wednesday afternoon. Water temps were 49 in most areas. I was surprised to see how low it is right now. Hopefully this rain helps or it could be a long summer for that lake.
mjk86 Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 Did ya have any luck? Ill prolly try for more crappies again saturday or sunday. Another guy fishing told me that the lake has had a hole in the dam and that its leaky causing it to be so low. Ive never seen it that low either, but this was the earliest I have ever been out. I really really hope that it fills back up cuz its a real gem, id hate to see it dry up. Its one of the only lakes at busch that has deep water.
Members badger88 Posted April 4, 2014 Members Posted April 4, 2014 just 4 small bass. The only place i had any luck was throwing deep diving cranks in 12+ feet of water around the brush piles. It seems all of the structure that was prime fishing last year is in about 2 feet of water now.
Justin92297 Posted April 5, 2014 Author Posted April 5, 2014 This rain should help. My neighborhood lake rose at least three feet. I will be out on the lake on Sunday
Smallie Seeker Posted April 6, 2014 Posted April 6, 2014 Fished 35 yesterday. 2 bass and 2 crappie was all that a buddy of mine and I could get to bite. Every other boat I passed said they weren't catching anything either. Good news is that it has filled right back up!
mjk86 Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 We were out sunday morning, looking for crappie....my friend lost a small one at the boat, and i caught a small bass. Pretty slow for us....awfully muddy! Cant believe that rain....the lake must have come up at least 10 feet.
