Hey guys, I'm looking for a 4.5 to 5 foot 'light' action spinning rod. I love fishing creeks and rivers for panfish and smallmouth bass out of my solo canoe, but my 4.5' ultralight is just to weak for bass and I find I'm losing a lot of fish. Any suggestions are appreciated. By the way. I don't want anything longer than 5'. Thanks

River Dog, you stumped me. I cannot even find a 5' rod in anything other than UL. If you want to stick to that as the max length, I'm pretty sure you would have to make it yourself or have it made. I would use the MHX CS722 blank from Mudhole and take the foot off the butt end. Just a suggestion.

That's why I came here because I can't find one that's 5' either lol. I hadn't thought about cutting a blank down and making it myself.

Doing a search on Bass Pro:

Ugly Stik makes a GX2 that is 5' and light action http://www.basspro.com/Ugly-Stik-GX2-Spinning-Pack-Rods/product/1304260626444/

and BPS makes a Power Plus 5' light rod http://www.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-Power-Plus-Graphite-Spinning-Rods/product/98364/

My current 5'6" L spin rod is a Quantum Teton Trout. It is a neat little rod and has whipped a couple nice smallmouth in fast water.

Thanks for all the links guys. I really like the 5'3" fenwick. But I also would love to start building my own rods. Is there a way to cut down an after market rod and put my own handle and reelseat on it?

Tell you what go to the stores etc and pick the rods up off the rack and test them. See if they have the action your looking for. That is the only way I know to really find something you want. It does not need to be expensive or brand name. I have seen some cheap rod last many many years.

Not simply.

If you want to build one there are plenty of blanks that would work. RPS suggested MHX, they are an excellent choice. Also hard to go wrong with St. Croix. Both offer lots of options.

With the advise from a friend, I bought a 6' GX2 light action rod.

It was on sale for 34.95. For the price, this is an excellent rod.

Now, I'm looking for a light action 6' or 6'6" casting rod for my wife. I can find spinning rods, but all the casting rods are medium action at the very least.
