fishinwrench Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 Maybe Crackens tach is off. First step should probably be to have someone check your charging system output, and verify your tach accuracy.

First step should probably be to have someone check your charging system output, and verify your tach accuracy. I bought the boat in February so I have not messed with that part of it so I probably should check that. I'll check that first then see about the timing/sync issue. I appreciate the help guys.
Members Cracken0812 Posted April 1, 2014 Author Members Posted April 1, 2014 Something doesn't sound right in the setup. If this is an 18-foot Ranger (one of the 300-series boats such as the 350, 360 or 370), that 150 should be turning at least 5200 with a 23 or 24 pitch prop. Its a 371 champ.

I think those engines are rated 5200 to 6000 and if you lug them down you will eventually kill the motor. I have a 90 390v Ranger with a 89 200 Johnson and it will turn 5600 rpms at 64mph turning a 24 Raker with an excellent hole shot. The only draw back is the mid range is not equal to mph/rpm ( like 35mph/4000rpm ). I have been told the older original Mercury Trophy 23p x 14 1/4" prop is the optimum prop for those motors, but hard to find!. They not only give bow lift, but lifts the rear as well.
REDSOXWSCHAMP Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 i've got a 13.3/4 x 23p trophy plus prop for sale
GNSfishing Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 I used to have a 350V with a 150 Evinrude all 1983 and I ran a 24 3 blade hooter and it would turn 6000 rpm running anywhere from 58 to 62 mph depending on load in the boat. My son has it now and is running a 4 blade 13-1/4 x 27 pitch at 5500 rpm running at about the same speeds as the 3 blade but with out the torque on the steering wheel. So either you tachometer is wrong or there is a problem in the boat because it should be turning high rpm with a 19 pitch prop wide open. Your throttle may not be wide open, could be out of adjustment or something blocking the butterflys in the carbs.

I did some research and if the throttle cam roller is missing or cracked, it will do as you described. Going to check it when I get home. Looks like I need to go prop shopping after I get the other stuff figured out. I will check the tach as well. Thanks.

JF660R Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 We were running a 3 blade 17p on our 85hp merc. Switched to a 21p and gain some of the mph we wanted but lost some rpm. Gonna try out a 19p and look for a happy medium. Have bought multiple props and found a wealth of knowledge from John at John's Hot Props in Ozark. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Nocturnal-FabWorx/346443168872812 Like Nocturnal FabWorx on Facebook
