Members jwarren Posted May 2, 2014 Members Posted May 2, 2014 I'm looking at a mid 90's model Shawnee. I'm in Memphis and boat is in Heber. I want to know if there are any issues I should beware of with this older hull. Length is 19' and width is 44" with floatation cubes on each side and under rear bench. Floor is the uneven version. Boat has been re-gelcoated inside and out and looks to be in very good condition from photos. Seller is asking $3400 for boat and trailer(EZ loader) but no rails, no electric, no side or rear storage, and only 1 chair. This seems high. Your thoughts on this hull and price b/c I think price is flexible. Thanks.
Terrierman Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 I bought a 2006 Shawnee Commissary Boat, (48" x 20'7") two spider chairs, two more seats with pole mounts, EZ Loader Trailer, low hour 2008 9.9 Yamaha, 58lb 12V Minnkota, hummingbird LCG,battery in good condition and three life jackets last November for $5500. Everything was in like new condition. I hated that floor with the ribs running front to rear and have since put in 1/2" CCA plywood floor with non-skid porch paint that matches the boat. Huge improvement for not much $$ ! $3800 for mid 90's hull and trailer sounds high to me too.
Members jwarren Posted May 2, 2014 Author Members Posted May 2, 2014 Thanks T....He's down to $3100 but I still think that's high considering all the things I'll have to add/upgrade to make it more current. Did you lay your floor in or tear the old out? I think standing all day on those uneven ridges would get hard on one's legs and toe tripping could be an issue.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted May 2, 2014 Root Admin Posted May 2, 2014 I own 12 Shawnees dated back to early 90's, all in a rental program. I've had no problems with leaks. I've had to build up fronts because of banging from renters- they're tanks now, indestructible. Over20 years later, I could sell them for more than I paid... They're great boats, made one at a time the old fashion way.

Cut the plywood to fit, painted it and screwed it to the ribs. Took all of about two hours. I do really like the boat.
Greasy B Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 I have been afraid to add the weight of a smooth floor in my Shawnee. The ridges aren't that bad, i just deal with it. One of the reasons I chose a Shawnee was because of the reputation for indestructabilty. After 14 years of smacking rocks and sliding over be barely wet riffles the boat has finally need some TLC, that's not bad. His father touches the Claw in spite of Kevin's warnings and breaks two legs just as a thunderstorm tears the house apart. Kevin runs away with the Claw. He becomes captain of the Greasy Bastard, a small ship carrying rubber goods between England and Burma. Michael Palin, Terry Jones, 1974

I've got bad knees and it really bothered them, plus everything on the floor got wet if there was the least bit of water in the boat. I figure it's probably less than 50 pounds of added weight. I hope I get 14 years out of mine, If I do, I'll be close to done by that time anyway. It's going to the James tomorrow and going to serve duty as it's model calls for. Grandson and one of his buddies are coming down and we're taking an overnighter. I'll haul the gear and the two of them can enjoy his new canoe.
Members jwarren Posted May 2, 2014 Author Members Posted May 2, 2014 Was 19" length common then? What would you guys guestimate this hull weight to be? Thanks.
