bferg Posted May 17, 2014 Posted May 17, 2014 Time to retire my favorite spinning reel. It was a Browning Citori- the old blue one. It has been a great reel- super smooth- nice drag. Loved it. My understanding is the new Brownings are not as well made but I am going to check them out... If you were going to spend $100 (give or take $40) what would you buy? I mainly use my spin gear with light line (4-6 lb test) to throw light swim baits and other finesse techniques- occasional drop shot or split shot rigs. Any recommendations? Other advice?

I fell in love with the "trigger" casting and I am on my third generation of the reels and they get better each time.. Very smooth drag and cranking.... They don't have "instant" anti-reverse - they only stop so the trigger is under your finger ( that you normally hold the line with ) ...It only takes someone about 3-4 cast to become natural .... You don't have to open the bail with one and then try to get the line to your casting finger-it is there in one motion !!! Dutch Posted May 17, 2014 Posted May 17, 2014 All of my spinning reels are Shimanos. I have several different levels of the from the Sedona to the Stradic. They are the most dependable reels that I have ever owned.
J-Doc Posted May 17, 2014 Posted May 17, 2014 I drug up a Abu Garcia Conolon spinning rod last summer just off of the Rocky Branch west ramp. The reel was toast. Rod was in decent shape. For grins and giggles, I bought a super cheap $25 Shimano micro spinning reel. Even their cheap stuff is better than others. I font use Quantums for this reason. Only their higher end stuff is decent. Pfleuger President is a very quality reel also. I've had one for almost 7-8yrs now. Never serviced it other than me cleaning and living it. Jerry Rapp Posted May 17, 2014 Posted May 17, 2014 I still have three of the old zebco cardinal 4's and two of the cardinal 3's. They are bullet proof. The were selling on ebay for $200+, but you can get a good one now for $50 or so (used condition). A nib is still over $100, but not near like they were 6 years ago. You could get a couple of the used ones, use them for a couple a years, and then maybe the cardinal market would come back and you could make some money off them.
bferg Posted May 18, 2014 Author Posted May 18, 2014 Thanks just- obviously expected the usual suspects to come up (Shimano/Pfluger). Spent some time today reading about Lew's. Going to check them out. Anyone have any of the Lew's bait casters? If so what model and how do you feel about it?
