Quillback Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 Fished out of Big M the last 2 mornings, fishing has slowed considerably for me, caught about 15 both days, best bite has been on a Trick worm c-rigged. A couple of top water fish on the Mikey and a couple on a Megabug fished on a wobble head. Can't find any fish deeper that 10 feet, the ones I've been catching are right up on the bank. Had a few decent fish, several fat keeper sized K's and a couple 2-3 lb. LM's. Experienced the joy of hooking myself this morning, tried to lip a K with a face full of Mikey, got one of the tines from the tail-end treble through the bottom outside of my pinky finger. Lots of fun with a frisky K still attached to the lure. Fortunately (I think) the barb came out the other side of my finger, so after getting the K off, I was able to snip the hook point and barb off and back the hook out. I'm netting all, and I mean all, Mikey fish from now on. 3 sets of sharp trebles flying around are just trouble waiting to happen. Water temps 78 - 79.
huntest Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 Quill I had a similar experience a few weeks back with a Megabass 110......ouch.....had to push it through then pull it out....ouch.....then decided on an overdue tetanus shot....can't be too careful
dtrs5kprs Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 +1 on the net. I also use rubber dipped gloves, especially if whites are in action. Had almost the same deal 4 years ago, except it was a brownie, a yellow magic, and the hook I was stuck to was in her mouth. Kept clamping open and shut on the hooked digit. Your story gave me the shivers.
merc1997 Bo Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 ouch!! i have had to do a bit of surgery on people over the years for hook removal. i did fish over the the kings the other night, as i felt the bass in the kings were done spawning a while back, and should be eating again. we managed 6 keepers with a 4lb. in the bunch, and several shorts. we did catch a few up on the bank, but most where in the 15ft. range. most were all caught on a 3/8 NuJig. here is something crazy, and that is there seemed to be two thermoclines showing. one was at 20ft. and the other was showing at 35ft. i have seen this before, and it sure can make figuring out just what to do very head scratching. bo
bjovan Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 I had the old hook in had this past week with a still frisky spot on the other end, single hook bait(c rig) hooked in the bottom lip. I was sliding my hand up for the grab it shook and stuck! Then shook again and ripped it out! Bled nicely and hurt like a mother for a while. Sucked to say the least
ollie Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 Ok, doesn't anyone else want to see the finger? Nice report and sorry you had to hook yourself, that does suck. I as well have had to do my own surgery on hooking myself and it wasn't pleasant. I had to drink my courage to go on with it! "you can always beat the keeper, but you can never beat the post" There are only three things in life that are certain : death, taxes, and the wind blowing at Capps Creek!
Pepe Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 Thanks for the report, QB. It sounds like a painful morning. I would think some of those fish would have moved out by now, but I guess they did not get the memo.
Quillback Posted June 5, 2014 Author Posted June 5, 2014 I did see some mid-channel top water activity, so I think there are some out deep, but I could not find any. I have also seen shad schools up near the steep banks, they may be spawning. Small gills are on the banks also. Lots of stuff going on, but I'm not seeing the bass activity you'd think you'd see this time of year.
Members pes146 Posted June 5, 2014 Members Posted June 5, 2014 Treble hooks in fingers is a nasty experience. A $10 BPS gripper can eliminate the risk (the Boga Grlp knock off). May cut down fish jnjury, too.
rps Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 QB, I do not net everything. Small fish I swing in. However, I never go near the fish with anything other than my boga grip and needle nose. Two trips to the emergency room for hooks I could not push through, plus two snip offs of through and throughs have finally taught me.
