Members matto Posted June 14, 2014 Members Posted June 14, 2014 Brand new here and hoping for some help. I've fished the ozarks on and off for many years and I live in Wichita, KS. I want to take my 13 year old son on a trip for smallmouth and spotted and I'm hoping for a guide recommendation. I'm active on enough similar sites (hunting related) to know that posts like these are often pet peeves to frequent posters. I'm looking for anyone's private holes, just a guide recommendation. Our targeted dates are the weekend of June 28 and 29. Although I have done some fly-fishing and I enjoy it, my son would rather stick with his spin-fishing gear. TIA.
fishinwrench Posted June 14, 2014 Posted June 14, 2014 The Little Niangua is a great "teaching stream", and among the closest to you. Some 1/16oz. Slider heads and 4-5" worms, small tube baits, a Rebel craw (or three), and a few 1/4oz. Topwater baits should be all you need to carry.
Gavin Posted June 14, 2014 Posted June 14, 2014 Dunno if you can rent a boat on the L. Niangua but a float is the way to do it. Thinking Riverside CG on the Niangua or Gasconade Hills or a CG on the Elk if you are driving from KC. Ned rigs for the kids, my 5 & 7 catch a bunch on it.
Members matto Posted June 16, 2014 Author Members Posted June 16, 2014 Trig, pm returned. Thanks to others who replied. Not really looking for a CG, but a cabin would be good. Anyone familiar with this place? www.cedarcamp.net
Members caseysmith14 Posted June 16, 2014 Members Posted June 16, 2014 Didn't stay at Cedar Camp but they did shuttle our truck down to Green Mill CG for a float a couple years ago, nice people. We caught a mix of species on the 2 night float. Hammered fish at the low water bridge about a mile up from Green Mill. Bonus, about a mile into the float from Cedar Camp there may or may not be a cave on the north side that is a fun side trip; if you can figure out how to get into it;)
Members matto Posted July 14, 2014 Author Members Posted July 14, 2014 Thanks to allw ho offered input. We ended up with Forrest Smith on the Elk River and had a great time. The bud light/ bikini hatch was littel heavier than I'd prefer, but the river was big enough for all of us. It's fun, relaxing way to fish. Have to try it again on my own sometime.
