nathanhooper Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 What kind do you all use? Tube, plastic, wire formed? What angles? I have "engineered" all my current ones, but am considering biting the bullet for some pre-made ones for my new setup. I am leaning toward the wire formed ones, like the drift master and hills rod holders. Not sure of the whole 3/8" vs 1/2" thing though. The plastic Cabelas and Bass Pro seem ok if I was only going to be catching whites and the average walleye, but I am wondering about their durability with stripers. I use a couple of tube types that I made out of steel. They work, but one is set too high of an angle, and one is a pain to get the rod in and out of. Also, they are permanently mounted and I would not mind having some that could be taken down. Got some opinions/stories to help in the decision?
Feathers and Fins Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 Atwoods. Plain simple and yes they will hold up to very large stripers with no problem I got sold on them when Bull sharks couldn't pop them. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
zarraspook Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 Second the Atwoods!! I use Atwoods and have caught up to 25#'er on them without a problem and you can adjust the angle up / down / left / and right; depending on the set up you are trolling with... kjackson Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 Folbes work very well. When a fish hits, you grab the rod and lift upwards. I also like the positive lock on the base. I also have Fish-Ons, and they are not quite as user friendly. Having said that, both will withstand anything you're likely to find in these lakes.
sfiser Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 what do you guys use as a trolling setup? what kind or rods are you using? do you use any weight to get the bait down or just feed out alot of line and let if dive on its own? Very new to the whole trolling thing but would like to give it a try.
Seth Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 Monster 33/45s on the back for cat fishing and trolling dipsy divers for paddlefish. Eventually, I will swap them for Driftmaster Pro duo's with the 0/33 degree rod angles. Left threaded models on the port side and right threaded on starboard.
JohnF52 Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 I have some Bee Ready holders. They work very well and can be made portable with the right brackets.

Ole F&F is a winded individual but if you're like me, you can speed read through it and then go back and read detail where needed. :-) Trolling is a broad topic. Best results have been Flicker shades on 10lb Fluorocarbon about 140-150fr behind the boat using something like Attwod rod holder's. Key thingis finding fish first. Trolling is like fishing a crankbait. Your boat becaomes your hand and reel. You present a bait when cranking a crankbait for bass right? Same with trolling. Precision casting and precision trolling. Same thing. Different technique. Need marine repair? Send our own forum friend "fishinwrench" a message. He will treat you like family!!! I owe fishinwrench a lot of thanks. He has been a great mechanic with lots of patience!
