Members KentO Posted July 17, 2014 Members Posted July 17, 2014 Taking my mobility-challenged FIL fishing Saturday. Looking for advice on where to place him and what sort of rig to help him fish. He'll be using an ultra light spinning combo.

NoLuck Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 There are 2 or 3 handicap piers in Zone 1 that they can fish with ease.
Members KentO Posted July 17, 2014 Author Members Posted July 17, 2014 Right...I know about the piers/jettys...thanks. What would be a good set up for him? He's not going to be able to cast and retrieve frequently. Would you recommend something like a jig under a float? Just want something that will maximize his opportunity for success and enjoying himself.
mic Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Yes... Just tell the fisherman your guest is handicapped (if not obvious) and they should get out of the way. My dad always uses the one closest to the spring. If you are there when the bell goes off, start with inlines or marabou jigs.... cast towards the tree on the other side and swing out in to the pool and bring in. After that bite slows, try a couple of things. Small jigs or flies under a float. Cast into the current and let it go into the pole. Bounce slowly back up stream once the line is tight. The other is to skip the float, cast into the pool and very slowly swing and retrieve a wet fly or mini jig below a weight back to you through the hole. If you do the flies, use a light leader or line. Dad has the best luck with olive and go deep in the pole. Good luck.
Flysmallie Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 related question: If someone that is NOT mobility-impaired is using a jetty or other spot designed for handicapped...is it kosher to ask them to move on? I would think yes. Actually if they haven't taken the hint and are already moving as they see you coming, then I would definitely ask or tell them to move on. That's what they were made for.
Wayne SW/MO Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 Anyone not handicapped has to give to someone that is. I would think a float with some small jigs would be a good place to start. The John Deere is popular, so is the Kapok, white or black, and I'm probably missing some. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
NoLuck Posted July 19, 2014 Posted July 19, 2014 Someplace nobody has mentioned is the new handicap ramp just below the dam. It has plenty of room for someone to fish.
NoLuck Posted July 19, 2014 Posted July 19, 2014 Have fish a white thread jig or a John deere mini jig under a float in the water that kinda swirls next to the ramp. He shouldn't have to cast much.
Wayne SW/MO Posted July 19, 2014 Posted July 19, 2014 Good point NoLuck. I suppose you've noticed that after spending all that money to keep structures away from the stream they are now building 3 new duplex units right across the road. I suppose eventually they will string them all the way to the nature center if the DNR has anything to say about it. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
