So tomorrow I've decided to make my way to the buffalo for the first time. I'm looking to spend most of my time fly fishing for smallmouth. Any suggestions for put in or take out spots? I'll probably have one of the nearby canoe rental places drop me off somewhere up river. Suggestions on who to use for what part of the river? Anyone wanna go? It's looking like it will just be me.

Well, how'd you end up doing?

Really enjoyed the river! After talking to other people on the river, I found out the water was a little off colored. However, the fishing was a little slow. I caught 3 smallmouth on clousers and my buddy caught a few perch on rooster tails. There were times we had the whole river to ourselves, so that was enjoyable. I'd definitely like to go back!

I figured you would have a tough time due to the off colored water. I did not want to send you somewhere and have the water be even more brown than I figured it would be and I didn't want to be negative and suggest you postpone your trip until the water cleared. You WILL do better next time as far as numbers as long as you have clearer water.

Well that's great. We fished the from Ponca to Kyle's a few weeks ago with stained water. Didn't catch big numbers of fish but had a great time just being in all the scenery and what not. That's the thing about stained water vs clear water, you will still catch more fish in stained water than you would sittin' at home. Are you throwing those Clousers on sink tip line or floating? Were you stripping them fast or slow?

I had a similar trip about a month ago. Water was up and stained and I caught 0 fish. My wife caught three smallies on an olive clouser. She is still bragging about catching more fish than me that day- of course... I was the one steering the canoe the whole time- haha.

HA, Jason, that's pretty par for the course when my girlfriend floats with me. I do all the paddling, steering, tackle management, etc while she gets dibs on all the fish. We joke about it all the time. I'm like her free fishing guide but when the trip is over I come home and work for her there too!
