Bass Pro Flyrod blanks

My dad has a friend that swims a crappie jig with a Bass Pro White River Hobbs Creek 5 wt.

My Dad would like a similar set up. It would be easy enough for me to go buy him one, but I screwed up and said wouldn't it be nice to have that blank wrapped as a jigpole rather than a flyrod.

So now I'm searching for that blank. He would like to duplicate the weight (in ounces) and the taper.

I might resort to buying the HC and stripping the guides off and replacing them with full guides.

BUT are the blanks that the different White river rods are built on available?

I built rods for a while and never saw them available as blanks either in the store or in the catalog. Why not use a similar length and wt blank though? Either from cabela's or hook and hackle? Just a thought. I've built a couple of rods on bastson forecast blanks and they are very reasonably priced and might be ideal for what you want.

I'd look at Dorber down in Flippin, AR for a similar blank. I had a friend who did something similar. Took his old fly rod and "converted" it by replacing the guides, mounting a little ultralight spinning reel, and made a great crappie jigger out of it.

unfortunately the hobbs creek or any white river rod is available in blanks, but cabelas has a pretty big catlog devoted to rod building.

Give Schneiders Rods in Mt. Home a call and tell him what you wanta do. He's been building rods longer than a lot of us have been on earth so I'm betting he's built almost exactly what you're wanting and can build it for you or sell you the components. When I was there @ a month ago he had some flyrod blanks near the door at close-out prices that looked good and we very inexpensive. CC

Thanks for te help. IF I was looking for myself, these things would all be posible. My Dad is the one looking for this white elephant and so far I think he's a blind man describing an elephants by grabbing the trunk.

I'm not 75% sure he knows what he wants. I at least know that there are literally dozens of tapers which you then multiply by rod line weights and again by length.

I am STRONGLY urging him to buy a rod like his friends and lets swith the tip guide out. That way he would at least know what he was getting.

I am concerned that he would get a rod that would be too heavy in hand or too wimpy on the hookset if he branches out in the world o blanks tht are available.

It's nice to go custom IF you know exactly what you want.

If I recall, the Hobbs Creek rod is a medium action. It should not be difficult to find the proper weight in a medium action rod. I noticed in the online Cabelas catalogue they have their blanks on sale now in the bargain basement.

Cabela's has a good rod building catalog, but youll find more stuff at Mudhole or Angler's Workshop. Dan Craft and Rainshadow are also a good source for blanks. In purchasing a blank you might want read up on the the Common Cents System and compare amounst the various rods that people have rated.

The system uses a deflection test to compare rod actions instead of manufacturer's rod rating, which may or may not be accurate. Find a rod he likes, then find a blank that is similar. Cheers.
