Bluff-Bassin Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 After reading a thread over on the table rock forum about using your electronics to vertical fish I figured I'd give it a try today. Admittedly it was tough on me to put away my ole standby (the football jig) and pretty much exclusively fished a drop shot (3/8 ounce w/ keitech dropshot worm) and a white slab spoon the whole day. I took some screen shots with my electronics to come back and review later on. Got on the water about 6:15. First stop was on a bluff near the saddle. I graphed some trees and tried to vertical fish them with the drop shot and spoon. No takers From there I ran up into Gulley Spring Creek. Tried a few more points with no success. Finally I idled over a non nondescript point on the creek arm and graphed a brushpile or laydown with alot of baitfish activity so I figured I'd stop and fish it for a bit. No takers on the brushpile itself but I noticed I was getting some followers coming up to check out the spoon on the graph. I drifted off the brush pile and noticed off to the side larger streaks on my graph. I dropped the spoon down, watched the spoon fall on the graph and boom, instant hook up with a 14 inch spot. I tried to get a screen shot of one of the fish hooking up on my graph. Here was the closest I got. The blue top line was my spoon and you can see the fish(the bigger line coming up to get it). Ended up catching 5 or 6 from this point. Couldn't really get on to the same pattern anywhere else it the creek. Got ready to call it quits around 1045 and was idling up to the dock at pontiac marina to load the boat and saw a huge group of fish schooling on top just inside the break wall tires. So of course I had to piddle with them for another 20 minutes. Ended up catching a 13"LM on a chrome spook jr Overall it was a nice surprisingly cool morning and I'm glad I forced myself to get out of my fishing comfort zone.
SmallyWally Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 Sure that photo wasn't in April. Ha. Not many people wearing hoodies in JULY. Nice report B B. Kindness is the language the blind can see and the deaf can hear.-- Mark Twain

Haha believe me I wasn't planning on wearing a sweatshirt, but got out of the truck at the ramp with a t-shirt and shorts and had to do some digging to find it. And after the early morning run to the first spot I wish I had pants not shorts on too! As soon as the sun came up it got hot in a hurry though.
Bluff-Bassin Posted July 29, 2014 Author Posted July 29, 2014 thx ,xlnt report, xj ! is that a mean mouth bass? I think it was. I was catching a mix of spots and smallmouth from the point, and this one looked just like the spots but with more brown to it. I've caught a handful of them before but most of them have been under 12inches so this one was quite a bit bigger.
Members abbfish Posted August 5, 2014 Members Posted August 5, 2014 I need to do what you did and leave all the other stuff behind and only bring out the drop-shot gear for a day. I try drop-shotting, but it's hard to get any confidence in it. I see activtiy on the screen, drop my bait down, see fish come up to investigate, but then move on, it's frustrating.
