vonreed Posted August 13, 2014 Posted August 13, 2014 I was at criegton as well. I waded from the upper end of the public access to the water intake tower. It is still a mystery to me how you are pulling fish out of there. I have thrown every jig/rig I have at every hole a structure at least a dozen times, and I keep comming up empty. Like, most common advice seems to be that if I've had this many unsuccessful trips, I just need to try new water, cause my water is fished out. But I keep seeing posts by people like you who do regularly pull decent sized fish out of there. Which tells me that the problem isn't the water, its my technique, which would make some gas-guzzling trip way out to better water a potential waste of time. Oh also, I forgot, when I got to the nice deeper water I switched over to a crank bait for a while. No love on the crankbait either. What size of fishing line are you using?
moguy1973 Posted August 13, 2014 Posted August 13, 2014 See the color that crayfish was? Greenish with red and brown accents? That's what color jigs you should be using. Green Pumpkin jigs work great on ozark streams for that very reason, they are imitating the crayfish that roam the bottoms. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
Terrierman Posted August 13, 2014 Posted August 13, 2014 What size of fishing line are you using? Good question. Should be 4 or 6 lb good quality mono. 4 better IMHO.
jbooth24 Posted August 13, 2014 Posted August 13, 2014 I use 8lb Tess and I sometimes use pumpkin seed like orange. It works well also.
moguy1973 Posted August 13, 2014 Posted August 13, 2014 Good question. Should be 4 or 6 lb good quality mono. 4 better IMHO. For smallmouth? Nah, not necessary to go that light. I use 8-12lb copoly and catch them just fine. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
Terrierman Posted August 13, 2014 Posted August 13, 2014 For smallmouth? Nah, not necessary to go that light. I use 8-12lb copoly and catch them just fine. I like the way 4 lb. fishes way better than the heavier lines, especially in current. But I do tend to go lighter on the weight of jigs.
Mofloatjunkie Posted August 13, 2014 Posted August 13, 2014 I like the 4 and six pound as well. It seems to be more sensitive and I believe I can feel more bites compared to bigger line. I usually have 4 lb on one rod and six lb. on another. The four pound I use for 16th oz. lures and smaller. I use the 6 lb for any lure bigger than that.
Mofloatjunkie Posted August 13, 2014 Posted August 13, 2014 And btw.. The number one reason we fish crighton so much is because we are poor and can't afford to drive anywhere else.
Wayne SW/MO Posted August 13, 2014 Posted August 13, 2014 Ya I got creative it's got an all Camo headliner OK I understand the arrow for an antenna, but a camo headliner???? Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
jbooth24 Posted August 13, 2014 Posted August 13, 2014 That's why I go mofloatjunkie is because it's close to home and good fishing and yes camp headliner the old one was falling off so put that up because I hunt and fish a lot and matches my personality plus it's looks cool
