bigredbirdfan Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 I have tried many different floating shoes and have yet to find any I really like. Just going to throw it out to ask everyone if there are products you really like. I have tried everything from old sneakers to sandels to river shoes with reallly nothing standing out. I would like something that keeps gravel out and has an non-slip sole on mossy rock. Any thoughts?
moguy1973 Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 Unless you go with a boot style wading shoe you aren't going to keep the gravel out. And there aren't many of those out there that don't make you look like a doof and that are light weight for paddling and give enough support if you have to get out and walk. Something like this isn't bad I guess: http://www.sierratradingpost.com/sperry-top-sider-son-r-bearing-water-shoes-for-men~p~6919r/?filterString=mens-water-shoes~d~451%2F&colorFamily=01 Academy has these: http://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/magellan-outdoors-153-men-39-s-neoprene-wading-boots/pid-14367 I bought a pair of these last year and they serve their purpose although they let in the gravel. They are easy on and off those if I need to clean them out though. http://www.sierratradingpost.com/teva-churn-shoes-amphibious-for-men~p~4958t/?filterString=mens-water-shoes~d~451%2F&colorFamily=08 -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
bigredbirdfan Posted August 14, 2014 Author Posted August 14, 2014 Well I will accept recommendation on open shoes as well as long as they clear gravel quickly and don't slip on mossy rock. I had a pair of TEVA White River Sandels once that probably were the best so far.
stlfisher Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 Tennis shoes...that are a solid material, no mesh or running shoes (these usually let in gravel). I buy a half to full size to small (so you don't get gravel in around you ankles). This works pretty well for me and I just wear ankle socks with them....never have had to clean them out while wading.
Terrierman Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 I used to wear my jungle boots until they finally gave up the ghost. Now I use flats wading booties with a pair of socks. No more gravel ever. I actually have the ones from Academy that are linked to above. Perfectly happy with them.
Members JimG Posted August 14, 2014 Members Posted August 14, 2014 I've been somewhat looking for a pair of wading shoes myself. I had a pair of water shoes, made for the beach or a swimming pool, but they wore out fast. They had an incredibly thin amount of felt on the bottom but although there wasn't much, it made a big difference going over slick rocks. The soles on most wading or water shoes usually aren't any better than the old pair of Nike's I usually wear to the creek. I don't want to go to a full fledged boot because I like to think if I needed to swim out of something I could in shoes or at least kick them off if needed. I've been thinking something like this might work pretty well depending on how soft the sole is: http://www.target.com/p/men-s-c9-by-champion-titus-water-shoes-black/-/A-15067290#prodSlot=medium_1_5&term=water+shoes
Jason R. Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 Chacos. +1- gravel gets in but it falls right back out usually. Not good if you need toe protection. http://flyinthesouth.com/
cnr Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 I just use my old felt soled Chotas and a neoprene sock/gravelguard. Yes it's a little clunky looking but very comfortable, no gravel in the boot, and good support up the ankle. You can't use felt anymore on the trout streams but reusing these boots for warm water wading has been great.
REDSOXWSCHAMP Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 forget all that and buy a pair of chuck taylor's.
