Alex Heitman Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 I've been out everyday until about 11 or so. Started off the first couple mornings chasing surfacing fish in open water with a topwater. Mostly some smaller K's with a few good K's and Largemouth mixed in. Also caught some throwing a deep crank at the school of surfacing fish. The topwater bite on open water only last until about 730 or so. The last few days though I have been running banks and have been catching some good LM right on the bank with a topwater. I mean dead shallow. This bite last until 10 or so. All of these have been good solid quality fish. You won't load the the boat but I've been able to get a nice limit by 8 every morning. Other than that I drop shot for an hour or so and call it a day. Mostly sub length K's with a few keepers mixed in doing this. 35ft plus over at least 50ft. It just gets boring to me. I believe if you had the patience you could throw a topwater all day of you are in the right area and still catch them. I noticed a lot more fish moving up for some reason after this huge heat wave. Doesn't make sense but they are there.
merc1997 Bo Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 i would say that you have been doing quite well. top water bites are always fun too. bo
Alex Heitman Posted August 28, 2014 Author Posted August 28, 2014 Too water is by far my favorite way to fish. I had my go pro video camera with me today and got some awesome strikes and jumps. It's been a blast for sure.
fishingaddiction Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 I just watched Pete Wenners video and his report is very similar to yours. The shallow bite with the topwater has improved since this heat wave. He also mentioned like you that the topwater bite is even good throughout the day if you find the bait in the creeks and pockets. If anyone hasn't seen Pete's report you can find it at www.hookedonbass.com. Nice report Alex and good job finding some fish and patterns that are working. Born to Fish. Forced to Work.
Unimog Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 A good friend of mine went out with Pete a few days ago and had a ball. Top water was good until the sun got up then they were done with it.
Quillback Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 Thanks for the report, always good to get some info on what is working.
Fish24/7 Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 sweet! , topwater is my fav too! topwater bites been going on at Bull since early April.. My reports sound like a "broken record" about it. saw a 4-12 and a 5-12 caught on top Tue. eve. Alex, would you mind sharing the "type" of plug you used? Small, big, walker, popper ect.?? Any particular bank features you looked for? thanks
merc1997 Bo Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 i sure think that there is a lot of quality lmg mouth up very shallow. it is one of those cover lots of water type patterns though. but, when that is the best method to gather up some better bites, it sure sounds good to me, and you sure can not argue with the success reported. most tournaments i fish, i just fish for 5 or 6 bites anyway. alex, you have to have some killer arms and wrists to stay with that top water all day. way to whack them. bo
