I have been fishing in a local neighborhood pond in the evening lately. The bite is pretty decent til 7 pm then it just stops as if someone turned off a switch. Normally fish senko style bait and junebug works well. Thought maybe it was color related so last night I tossed black, something. The water is clear to stained. Last night I even tried a small crankbait which has worked there in the past. Not sure there are any big fish in the pond, catch mainly 8-11" ones.

Any suggestions on what to try?

Hard to say what will work. It's a tough time of the year. I'd probably try a big worm, like an Old Monster, in a dark color on a Texas rig or Carolina rig. If you have a lot of weeds that may not work however. I'd also try a jig. If you're seeing top water activity, I'd throw a top water of some type like a Spook.

Water temps are still pretty high in most lakes right now. Because fish are cold blooded, their metabolism is geared to the water temps but once temps reach a certain level, they go into shutdown modes else they'd have to be feeding almost continuously. I would bet if you went back to that pond after midnight and fished it you find you'd hit another feeding period.

Getting those fish to bite when they shutdown is tough. Enjoy the short time they're biting and understand that as temps begin to fall with the beginning of fall, the fishing bite will become a little more consistant.

I'd start throwing a buzz bait late. White.

I have always believed in the black or at least dark bait at dark... you throw a white bait when it gets dark?
