bs1827 Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 I've been quitely on this forum for years, but I only recently started posting. You guys provide some great content and I'm excited to interact more. My name is Brent and I'm from the Springfield area. I enjoy wading the local streams for just about any of our warmwater species- especially with a fly rod. I'm beginning to dabble into trout fishing and I'm dying to land my first carp on a fly. I began tying my own flies about a year ago and I'm still packed full of questions, so bear with me. When I'm not fishing I really enjoy mountain biking, but when fall rolls around my mind switches to bowhunting. Hoping I can continue to learn and pick up a few tips and trick along the way. Merry Christmas everyone!
fishinwrench Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 Welcome! Have you tried a fat bike in the snow yet ? Don't, it doesn't work.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted December 19, 2014 Root Admin Posted December 19, 2014 Fat bike in the snow... I'm sure there's a youtube there someplace.... Thanks for posting. It's always good to have new people posting on the board.
fishinwrench Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 Fat bike in the snow... I'm sure there's a youtube there someplace.... Oh Yeah there's a bunch of them. Apparently there are certain places on earth where the snow falls perfectly packed just right.....but it ain't anywhere I've ever been. I tried a fat bike a couple times last Winter and I've never felt stupider in my life. It's a sick joke. LOL
gramps50 Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 Welcome Brent, great place to hangout and learn a few things along the way.
Nighthawk Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 Brent hang out in Plateau fly shop in Springfield. You'll pick up a lot of tips.
Fishingmill Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 Welcome Brent. Good luck with catching a carp on the fly. I am hoping to catch my first this spring. I caught a smallmouth buffalo earlier this year and it was a blast. instagram.com/fishingmill twitter.com/Fishingmill vimeo.com/fishingmill
bs1827 Posted December 22, 2014 Author Posted December 22, 2014 Welcome! Have you tried a fat bike in the snow yet ? Don't, it doesn't work. Ha! I've yet to try it myself. I'll stick to my 29er on the dirt, but I will admit that those fatbikes look like a ton of fun. Thanks for the warm welcome guys!
Jim Elam Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Hi Brent. I am not an expert, but I have caught a few carp on the fly, and it is a good time. I have tied for 15 + years, have built several graphite fly rods, and own far more fly fishing equipment than I care to admit to. The James river has some pretty good carp fishing in the spring and summer. Stockton can be good as well. So can lake springfield. The best advice I can give you for carp on the fly is to cast past the strike zone well ahead of the fish, then carefully move the fly into the fish's view. Can get a little tricky, so be persistent. The actual fly matters less than the presentation...most of the time. Good luck. Let me know if I can help you out. bs1827 Posted January 13, 2015 Author Posted January 13, 2015 Thanks for the pointers Jim! I've found a few local holes that usually have a handful of carp in them. Can't wait to get out after them this spring and summer.
