JohnP Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 Know there's a reloading forum but my target audience I believe is on here and doesn't look like that forum gets hit much. Thinking of getting into to reloading steel/non toxic and just curious what the cost savings are if any compare to buying off the shelf? Been looking for a new hobby and why not do something during the off season to stock up for upcoming duck seasons .
duckydoty Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 I would imagine in the long run you would be saving money. Getting over the start up fees would be the issue. I tie alot of flies instead of watching tv as a hobby and I sure do have a surplus of them. As with catching a fish on flies I tie myself, there has got to be some real satisfaction in shooting ducks with shells you have loaded yourself. There has to be added value in that. jdmidwest Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 I can reload metallic cartridges an see some savings as long as you dont consider time involved. I reload rifle ammo for accuracy more than savings. I have never thought about shotshells. Never really shoot enough to justify cost of equipment. Non toxic components ate hard to find also. Feathers and Fins Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 Unless you are doing a lot of shooting reloading non-tox is not worth it. My father and I use to shoot every weekend growing when I was growing up 8 to 10 boxes each Saturday plus Upland hunting so it was worth it (good ole lead days) He still shoots and now that he is retired its more like 4 boxes 5 days a week. His price per box going off memory is something like 1.79. I looked in to it when I was doing a lot of conservation snow goose hunting for the non-tox and depending on which type of load (shot) it between 8 bucks a box and 40. That was around 7 years ago and it was a nightmare trying to find the shot. Its cheaper just to buy factory loads from a store https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
