Riverwhy Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 It's the middle of January and fishing withdrawal combined with cabin fever is enough to drive me insane. So, I got to thinking about all the recent trends in fishing over the past few years and I began wondering which were really great new lures and tactics and which are fads and which have really been around for years but are just being presented in a new light today. My musings include the following: Alabama Rigs Ned Rigs Jerk baits Drop shot rigs Spy baiting Float-n-fly Pre-Rapala wiggle warts Are these really all great new (or old) fish catching breakthroughs?
fishinwrench Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 The last revolutionary breakthrough that made a lasting impression on me was Fluorocarbon. Nothing truly awesome has happened since IMO.
Wayne SW/MO Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 In my opinion the Alabama rig, haven't used one, and the real suspending jerk baits are new. Lures were modified before to make them suspend, but it was a lot of work. The rest are just old methods with new names or very slight modifications. In my experince the Texas rigged plastic worm was a tsunami. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Feathers and Fins Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 They all go in phases mostly based off what the last tournament was won with. Like the new craze with big flutter spoons or the feathered bucktails. They have all been around for years. Some of the Pro's have the old school knowledge to remember them some of the younger ones are talking to old timers and using them. With the better tolling and production of lures many of the oldtime lures are making comebacks now that are far superior to what they once were, while others because of mass production have lost the ( whatever it was ) that made them so good. Lures are designed to catch fishermen more than fish IMO. The cheapest lures sometimes are far superior to the high dollar lures. For instance a Flicker shad is 4.00 a rapala is 8.00. I Cotton Cordell pencil Popper runs 5 bucks but I have seen some of the new poppers as high as 20 bucks. The Cotton is not the prettiest on the block but has caught more fish on it than I could dream of. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
