New member that has been reading past posts, so thought i'd ask my question.

I run a 1998 G3 with a 1998 F50 Yamaha four stroke. Motor pushes the boat decent. Ive read in the EFI motors you can remove the restrictor plate and gain an additional 10 HP " thats what they say" and am wondering since i have the carb. model, if there are options other than changing prop, that i can do, like change carb needles, etc. to gain more HP?

Thanks and great info on this site. Im in the Springfield Mo. area.

Dang Wrench, reading these old posts, i was hoping you would be the one to say "yep, change out needle valves, add some boysen reeds, up the octane to 100, and you'll run with the big boys".

I watched a few vids on youtube of the removal of the resistor plate, and those that tried it said they gained a considerable gain on takeoff, but maybe 2 to 3 MPH on the top. My first thought when i read about the removal, was that will lean the engine out to much, and we all know what happens with a lean motor in the long haul. But they say these will remap themselves to allow for that.

Thinking of changing prop, as its usually my better half and myself in the boat, and see if i can get a few more MPH. Ya know, the fish on the other end of the pond wont wait that extra 2 minutes with the current setup.

Thanks for the reply.

Well, there are a few things you can do to boost top end, but the trade off in idle/mid-range will make you hate the motor. It will turn into a hard starting, sloppy running POS.

Thanks. For no more than we use it for, other than maybe a prop change, i will leave it and spend the money on electronic upgrades at some point this year.
