I plan on taking my dad on a spring break fishing trip to Oklahoma around March 15. Looking to stay fairly close to the border as we are located in Kansas City. Never been down there and don't have a clue of where I should think about taking him. If anybody has any good places or tips for going down there I would greatly appreciate it.

Check out Grand Lake of the Cherokees in NE Okie. The town of Wyandotte or Grove both are close to water, and good fishing. Its a good fishery, good water, and pretty close to where your looking to go.

I would agree for going to Grand Lake. The Bassmaster Classic was there in 2013. I also live in KC and did a trip all the way to Lake Texoma to troll for stripers a few years back. It was a long trip to get there.

Grand Lake is a great bass destination, but don't expect great numbers this time of year. Stick baits, umbrella rigs and an assortment of jig combinations are usually effective this time of year. Four or five straight days of warming would be ideal to plan a trip around. If fishing mid lake, there is real good launching at Wolfe Creek Park in Grove and plenty of motels close. Crappie fishing and catfishing is excellent at present time.

I grew up on Texoma. I was born there, in Sherman, and lived in Pottsboro. The lake and the Red River were my backyard. Caught many a stripper and large cats in both. I still go there a few times a year, and camp with my family that lives there.

JWD, I would do as Possum said.mThrow stick baits and U. rigs out to 10' of water. I would focus on main lake points, and depending on temps by that time, try secondary with a change in bottom, and focus on transitions.

My fishing buddy grew up in that area as well. That's why we have made that trip a few times. We typically go the first or second week in June.

That lake had been so low for the past few years, it makes me sick to see it like that. The beach area on the Okie side near Burns Run, you can walk out literally 100 yards before your feet get wet. I guess it congregates the fish more, but crap, give them some water.

I was down there this past weekend, at The American Rodeo at AT&T Stadium, and they received several inches of snow, on a few occasions, so maybe that will help.

The Texas state walleye and smallmouth record were recorded at lake Meredith north of Amarillo. That lake is below conservation pool by 78ft. The water is supplied by the Canadian river flowing from new Mexico. Most locals in addition to the extreme droughts the last few years blame the agricultural use for it's demise.
