rangerman Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 One more piece of advise...if you haven't eaten at The Cookery in Fish Creek. You had better. ;-) I don't normally eat fish while out, but their perch sandwich later causes cravings. :-). Also if your see channel markers and such. Fish them. Sturgeon bay fish like to hang on them.
Pat Magee Posted July 21, 2015 Author Posted July 21, 2015 Looking forward to heading up there in 2 weeks. Should I fish around Peninsula SP or on the main lake side? I will be on foot or probably some leaky rental kayak. I'm not hiring no #$&@ guide, so someone please PM me some tips, GPS coordinates, or good advice. I will repay in kind with barbituates and peyote. Good idea on not hiring a guide....well at least don't hire the one I did if you do! It's a long story for another day. If I were you, I would head further North up 42 to you get to County Road ZZ in Sister Bay and then go right and take that into Rowley's Bay. You can rent a kayak at the little marina down there for pretty cheap. The reason I am suggesting this spot to you is because it was one of the only places I could find where you could sight fish all day long. You have a couple options, the best one is to go straight out of the bay and head out to the point on the far right. It will get a little choppy here if the wind is moving so I would suggest bringing a cheap anchor and finding some way to keep yourself stationary. It is on the Lake side after all. There were a dozen bass boats just sitting on this area last Saturday during a tournament. The other option would be to fish the mouth of the Mink River. The water is a bit warmer over that way and it is also the shorter paddle. The only problem is that the fish aren't as big over there. I caught a hand full of shorts on a Megabass Knuckle 60 and a War Eagle spinnerbait in charteuse/white/grey. If you want to get some more details, feel free to PM me and I will tell you everything I know. I fished Peninsula for about 4 hours but the wind, rain, and waves made fishing extremely difficult that day and I never hooked up with one. The one area that I will try next year will be in and around Nicolet Bay in the park. They have a nice little dock and parking area there. I just went to a nondescript spot labeled "Kayak Ramp" and fished from there but the coves were pretty shitty for fishing. Enjoy your trip, I freaking love it up there!

I would also suggest the Waterfront in Sister Bay. Great place to take the lady friend after pissing her off while you are out fishing all day. Bring some $$ though....it's pretty spendy. rangerman 1
ColdWaterFshr Posted August 2, 2015 Posted August 2, 2015 Had a great time up in Door County last week. I didn't get to fish as much as I wanted, but it was better than nothing. Thanks for all the tips and info, guys. Howies Bait and Tackle. Check. Bought some tubes there at the advice of a 15 year old working the counter and they worked great. The Cookery Perch Sandwich. Check. Delicious. The White Gull Inn cherry-stuffed french toast. Check. Outstanding. Fish boil. not this time. lots of other fun times and things we did. Cave and Kayak tour around Cave Point was a lot of fun, but quite a workout in the wind. Fishing notes: kayak rentals don't open until 9 a.m. (that blows) can't fish from bank, have to get out in at least 10-12 feet of water 16-17 inch smallmouth up there are the norm. I have a feeling if I fished for another hour, I would've landed a real pig. must've caught 7 or 8 gobies in the hour and half I got to fish. Nicolet Bay is where I fished, and within sight of the beach. Thanks again for the great tips and advice everyone. Pat Magee, Mitch f, MOsmallies and 1 other 4
Pat Magee Posted August 3, 2015 Author Posted August 3, 2015 That's awesome! Nicolet Bay was one of the spots I wanted to try but ran out of time. I stumbled upon it when out on a bike ride while in Peninsula SP. It is so great to hear you did well up there. Looks like the weather cooperated too! Hope you fattened up on some Wilson's Ice Cream too! When you get into the goby like that I hear the drop shot will keep them off the hook since they are bottom feeders.
rangerman Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 Great stuff!! Had a couple of perch sammys myself. I didn't even take a pole and very much regretted it...the west winds they had pushed the warm water off shore and brought the cold water in...seen a good number of steelhead and salmon feeding in 20 foot of water off the coast guard station pier on the Lake Michigan side of sturgeon bay. Alewives were absolutely stacked along the banks and salmons is we're destroying them. Very cool sight as those fish are absolutely monsters when they are on the feed. not very cool not having a rod though.. Weather is one helluva lot enjoyable than that here in Missouri. September can't get here soon enough.....
