Pat Magee Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 I decided to head out to the Current since I was off work and wanted to float a stretch where I could fish for smallmouth while also targeting trout. I floated from Cedars Grove to Akers Ferry with a shuttle courtesy of Jadwin Canoe. If you ever are in need of a shuttle during the week, definitely give them a call, they were friendly and cheap! When I got to the put in I noticed the river was up from all of the rain the last few weeks and was a tad off color as well. Visibility was maybe 2-3ft. Completely float-able and fish-able so I didn't care. There were a couple other people parked up the road putting in canoes but it was a pretty calm morning. It took awhile before I caught my first fish and it I was struggling to find a pattern and there wasn't much chasing going on so I decided to change it up a little. I normally don't use live bait but I heard some great reports on this stretch fishing minnows. I decided it was worth a couple minutes of my time so I pulled the kayak over into a shallow area and set up my minnow trap. Before I knew it I had around 20 minnows and a couple of crawdads as well. I decided to fish the craws first and never had any luck so I switched to the minnows and was promptly rewarded with a smallmouth. I caught quite a few bows in this area as well and all of them were 15" and up. The smallmouth bite however never seemed to get going and I only caught one other dink before arriving at Welch spring. All in all I saw probably 40 canoes or kayaks and rarely any others fishing. I enjoyed the hell out of my little solo trip and look forward to taking another trip from Akers to Pulltite in the near future. **I have never attached any pictures to a post so hopefully I don't booger it up to bad. Gavin Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 That's nice rainbow! Good for you. Favorite float for a winter fish fry.
Pat Magee Posted June 29, 2015 Author Posted June 29, 2015 I knew I would botch the pictures! I was thinking about keeping this place in mind for a winter float. I know it isn't the most picturesque part of the current but it is a perfect length for a one day trip. I will definitely make plans to head back for the winter.
MOsmallies Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 Awesome report and nice fish! Glad you got the Coosa wet again. We need to go soon
Smalliebigs Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 Nice report Pat. Don't do Akers to Pulltite.....the fishing is the worst section of the whole river......do not float that section to fish. Pat Magee 1
Pat Magee Posted July 2, 2015 Author Posted July 2, 2015 Well I guess I will have to scratch it from the list of trips to go on Smalliebigs. It's a shame because I was going to see if you wanted to join me
Pat Magee Posted July 2, 2015 Author Posted July 2, 2015 Awesome report and nice fish! Glad you got the Coosa wet again. We need to go soon I am going to put the Coosa to good use. Hopefully getting the anchor trolley installed will make it more use-able on bigger lakes. I am hoping you can get your ducks in a row for a weekday trip soon!
