Power bait for trout.

Recommended Posts

Most of us know that trout will swallow Power Bait. In order to not allow this you need to be on the ball to set the hook. right?

I found that using an Eagle Claw #4 crappie hook, with the cam twist in the hook shank will stop most of this. Using this hook normally allows the hook to set into the lip or lower jaw!!!

Also Carolina rigging helps even more.

I've tried mashing the barb down, but most of the time the Power Bait gets yanked off by sneaky fish.

Hmmm I'll have to think about how to secure the Power Bait on a barbless hook.

PowerBait may offend the purist, but it sure helps children catch some trout.

As long as PowerBait is legal, I may make comments about it, but it will not offend me if someone uses it. If legal, you have every right to use it or do it as the case might be... No matter how wrong it is to do so... Just kiddin'...

Anyway, Ham... I just think you hit on something there. PB, corn, cheese, marshmallows, etc. are a good way to get kids on trout. Maybe if they would limit PB to those 12 and under or something similar, it would offend some much less... Of course, Berkley would pour mounds of money to lobby against such regulations...

Your point is well taken.... Ah, but SF... many have never fished a day in their lives. I'd say up to 12 to allow for them. I've watched kids who could out cast, tie, and fish many of the guides on here fishing Dry Run Creek (under 16.) But, you have to put the age limit somewhere...

For that matter, talk to Brian Wise or Leonard about how young they can cast a fly rod. They start much much earlier now....

You're probably any eight year old can probably be taught how to fly cast a lot easier than most adults.

I'll insist though that when fished correctly Power Bait will outfish most people that are using a fly rod. If helping a child catch a few trout and get some enjoyment out of a PUT AND TAKE fishery requires that I use some Power Bait, then so be it.

Who was it that said "Sin and sin boldly"? I don't think he was talking about Power Bait, but ...

My grandmother taught me how to fish, and we always used whatever was handy...marshmallows, left over sandwiches, salmon eggs, whatever! And I was young. :D However, I sometimes like to still drop a marshmallow (until the end of this year, I guess!) and it's funny to see John's jaw drop when I pull one in on 'em! My son loves it too...feed one to the fish, eat 5 himself.

As I understand it, corn, marshmallows, and other human food stuff will be illegal starting in 2008. I don't have the full details, myself, but that is how I understand what I have seen.

I can bring home the trout...fry it up in a pan...and never let you forget I caught it! 'Cause I'm a woman!

Have you ever tried circle hooks? Find the smallest circle hook you can usually a #4 or #6. The trick to circle hooks is not to set the hook or you'll pull it right out, even if they've swallowed it. Just let them take it and slowly reel in and the hook will set it's self in the corner of the mouth.
