slab slinger Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 Found a couple hours to relax today and play around with a crawdad pattern jig I have been wanting to tie up for a while now. Think they turned out pretty good. I have a great buck tail and craft fur minnow pattern but didn't have a real good craw pattern. Just curious If anyone else ties jigs for the river and what patterns and colors work best. Thanks Buzz and Dougie 2
Mitch f Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 Those are very nicely done. Should catch some fish! I would add a weedguard to protect these jigs, for all the work you put into them slab slinger 1 "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
brother dave Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 very nice indeed. Did they catch you some fish? slab slinger 1 I shop at the outdoor grocery store
slab slinger Posted July 19, 2015 Author Posted July 19, 2015 I haven't got to use them yet and that's a shame living 4 miles from the James. Ready for action though as soon as I can sneak away. Haha. Yes, will drill and add weed guard later. Makes them easier to tie without weed guard in the way. Yeah, there a little work to tie but not bad if you enjoy such things. Real special catching fish on something you made instead of store bought. But I fish store bought lures also. It stings a little more loosing your creation more than the other. Dougie 1
Old plug Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 I Like the rabbit fur. It was entirely a new material to me when I began tying my own jigs again this last spring. I experimented with ttying just tying 1 or 2 pieces to a blank crappie jig. It works as well as marabou and is a lot tougher. I do not use it on bass jigs above 1/4 oz. slab slinger 1
Gavin Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 Look nice. Tying around a weed guard presents a few obstacles but it is doable. Whip finish by hand our half hitch and glue. slab slinger 1
Old plug Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 Gavin------I have been thinking about weed guards on mine. I have a couple blanks Mitch made. I think I could tie that tiny cable wire stuff Mitch used right onto the jig hair then just bend it up.
slab slinger Posted July 19, 2015 Author Posted July 19, 2015 I have looped and tied in 20 or 30lb mono for weed guards on crappie jigs works good and cheap guard material. I pour and paint my heads usually drill 1/8" hole and apoxy in 4 or 5 strands of weed guard on my river jigs. But tying in bendable wire is a great idea. Prob try that on the next ones. Thanks
