jdmidwest Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 I entered the Windows 10 Insider Preview Program back in Oct. of last year. I installed the very raw version of it then on a partition of my laptop and started testing. I never was a fan of 8 and never bothered to upgrade my versions of Win 7 to it. But, the insider program stated from the start, they would upgrade both versions for free. The builds have been coming monthly and I have enjoyed it, watching the software progress thru its stages. I had not been involved with anything like it since XP in its development stages. Tonight I am on the final build that should be released to the public next week on the 29th. You may have noticed an upgrade icon on the notification bar if you are running Win 8.1, Win 8, or Win 7. It will be free if you want it, but unless you know what you are doing, wait a while. I have been running Firefox to view the forum all thru the testing. I have not used the new Native Browser called Edge that will replace Internet Explorer, so I can't tell you what that will do. But everything else seems to work well. Other than a glitch I just noticed about a rotated pic I posted, the preview showed it aligned correctly. I like the new menus and layout. It seems to be pretty lean and fast. The system requirements are not any more than the previous 2 operating systems. That is mainly because it is designed for tablets, pc's, and phones. awhuber 1 "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
awhuber Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 Thanks for the update. I will so glad to get rid of 8.1.
Flysmallie Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 Thanks for the update. I will so glad to get rid of 8.1. What's wrong with 8.1? Oh yeah, it sucks. I have it on a Surface and it makes it just about unusable. I hate that thing. My laptop runs 7 and it's fine, but 8 ish sucks. Hope to get the Surface upgraded soon. I also hope it makes a difference. If that don't work I'm selling that thing. awhuber 1
Flysmallie Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 iOS is nice and all. If you want to run apps and do snapchat and play games and LOL and OMG. My kid's Samsung Galaxy Tab is sweet too. But if you want to run actual programs then you are stuck with Windows for the average user.
cnr Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 I couldn't resist throwing iOS out there (like the old Ford vs Chevy debate, which truck is better?). BTW, I manage a development team and they are on iOS and PC. The PC is mainly to test how our development appears in IE8. Don't even get me going about that crappy browser.

Any idea on how 10 handles legacy applications? We still have some VB6 based applications running in production and they work fine with Windows 7. We are in the process of rewriting them in C# but the completion of that is at least 6 months or more away. DaddyO We all make decisions; but, in the end, our decisions make us.
Seth Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 I don't get the hate for 8.1 aside from the Metro start menu. Once I sucked it up and made the jumped from 7 to 8.1, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The best thing I did was wipe out everything from the Metro start menu and set it up with the applications that I actually use. Once I did that, I actually preferred it over 7. It definitely uses less resources and runs better than 7. With that said, I still run 7 pro at work on all of our workstations because it works with all of our software. I'm all about don't fix it when it ain't broke when I'm managing a 1000+ machines for other users. Since 7 is supported until January 14, 2020, I have a while before I will have to worry about upgrading things at work. I'm looking forward to being able to download my copy of Windows 10. If the 8.1 haters like 10 then I should really love it.

I have not really full blown installed any of my software on it until the final release. I did run into an issue with my Blackberry Link not wanting to run on it. But I noticed today they came out with a new version, so I am going to try it tonight. Install it on a partition and do a dual boot like I am. Then you can play with your software and see how it reacts. If all works well for me, I will probably wipe the whole drive an just run 10 on my laptop. It looks like my insider trial may have given me an upgrade from 7 home to 10 pro, a little bonus. Seth Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 For those of you that have all of your hard drive space allocated to your current OS, use the directions on the following link to shrink the volume and allocate some space for a new OS installation. https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/gg309169.aspx
