Tightline Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 Vonreed, thats a goodin. Can I ask were you in a boat or on the bank? I don't blame you a bit for keeping her,but now that you have caught that big one some time down the line it might be easier to let one go back and spawn.I never thought I could ever release a keeper Walleye, but the last 2 years I've done it.It really is gratifying. And Lord knows nobody likes to eat them more than I do.I still keep most to eat,but if I catch a female full of eggs and already have enough to eat I'll let her go. Hope we can see pictures. TL

Bill Babler Posted February 9, 2007 Posted February 9, 2007 Don't mean to tinkle on anyone's parade, but according to one of our biologist, I don't believe they have ever found any natural recruitment in Bull, or very little at best. Very similar to Taney in the fact that there is a spawn and a spawning run on several areas of the lake. But like the trout there seems to be no or very little natural fry being produced. You ask why are certain areas closed during the spawn? Simply because there are a high number of very accessable fish in those locations that are very vulnerable. Also Swan is a major gathering point for the dept. for walleye sperm and eggs to be reared off the lake and then reintroduced as fingerlings. If you catch a good walleye and you want it, for gosh sakes thats great. There is a stocking program in place, to replenish walleye. None for bass however hum. http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
Tightline Posted February 9, 2007 Posted February 9, 2007 Thats funny, wonder how my dad and me use to walk down over the hill to the Pothole and catch Walleye when I was about 6 years old. That would have been 43 years ago, there was no stocking program then so where did they come from Bill? And like I said before I keep alot of Walleye Crappie, and White Bass but I have also learned not to be so greedy when the fishing is good and try to put some back. As for Swan and them being very accessible, what are they doing up in there any way (crazy fish). Hope I didn't tinkle back at you,I just think if a person is going to (Talk the Talk) Then they need to (Walk the Walk) so to speak. And Bill if you want to keep every keeper Walleye you catch thats your business. TL.
Bill Babler Posted February 11, 2007 Posted February 11, 2007 Tight, I have been fishing said area since 68 and although we did catch nice Eye's then, the last 10 years have been far better. I know that's only 39 years, and you do have me by a few. I just think if a guy wants to eat a walleye, he should be able to without riducule. as they are a stocked fish. Unlike the bass. Why do the brown trout and the rainbows make a spawning run on taney? Crazy Fish. Why do the Walleye make a spawning run up the White river and the James river and don't hatch any fry? Crazy Fish. Why do the paddlefish make a spawning run on Truman dam? Crazy Fish. Why is the Kings River the only known river on Table Rock that produces Fry? I'm not a biologist, I just make an effort to try and keep up with what is going on. 40 to 50 years ago was quite a different situation as far as all the spawning area's are concerned. 1 small philoplanctin that may have been present can vanish, and take with it an entire spawning population of fish. That's not from me, thats from warm water fishery biologist, no one knows. As he said, just cause they did it years ago, don't mean its happing now. The only fish I keep anywhere is 2 or 3 walleye a year maby 8 crappie and perhaps a couple of limits of trout. When these fish are stocked as the walleye in Bull are, and the trout in taney, I believe that a guy has a right to eat a couple. Maby I'm wrong, just hate to see some guy jumped for eating a fish that is being stocked for just that purpose. http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
Members porter57 Posted February 11, 2007 Members Posted February 11, 2007 dont know why anyone would jump all over someone for keeping LEGAL fish. its one of the prime reasons i go fishing. to harvest a tasty meal of natural food. one of our highlights of the year is a big fish fry that everyone is invited to after a major trip in our group. much better than any store bought fish. i understand the need to return prime breeding stock and actually, the smaller legal fish taste better to me anyway. oh and bill, i keep much more than that, all legal ,but definately more than that. not a trout fan,and never could fish walleye consitently ,but limits of crappie,OH YEA! dont keep the bass though, dont really care for em in the pan,i fish for em,but usually release em immediatly.havent specifically fished for bluegill in years, but we used to keep a mess of em from duck creek. catfish usually get kept. false spawning runs of any species of fish are nothing new, been happening ever since there were dams.

vonreed Posted February 12, 2007 Author Posted February 12, 2007 I can't post one on cause i didn't get a pic with a digital camera. I just use disposable ones. I was fishing at night so I don't even know if color matters, but it was Clown.
Bill Babler Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 I think everyone is ok with eating a walleye, I do understand Tight's point. He is the type of guy you want on the river. Don't know him but would guarantee he would never take to much or waste any of what he took. Didn't mean it to sound like I was a know-it-all, far from it. I am just interested in what the fisheries managers keep telling me. Who knows, they may not really know either. Times are a changin and most usually not for the best concerning us outdoor types. Good stickbait colors are Purple top white belly, Purple over Chartruse, Clown, Black Back Gold Side, and traditional Black Back Silver Side. Others will have lots more favorites. I have also done right well on a rainbow pattern at the pothole. http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
Tightline Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 Well Mr Bill can you quote ANY part of this thread where someone was ridiculed for keeping any fish ?Nope didn't think so,the only person getting jumped on was me just for trying to spread a little conservation .I SAID now that he had caught that big one it might make it easier if he ever did want to release one. And I would disagree about your claim or any biologist that its a false run the Walleye make.I have caught the little devils many times in my minnow traps and seines up in Swan. The reason they don't produce as many fry now is because there aren't as many big spawning females, because of the pressure. My opinion. The difference between now and then was we caught alot bigger fish back in the day,and now its more fish,we don,t see those 14 15 18 pounders like we use to.And with all the pressure thats on them now days I doubt if that 21 lb record is ever broke, unless a few of us turn back a bigin once in a while. Bill any time you see something you don't like about anything that I post, just jump right on,cause I'll just take it then probably jump right back at ya.But this time you had no reason to jump!! TL
