Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted February 7, 2007 Root Admin Posted February 7, 2007 http://hipwader.com/2006/gr-pike-fishing-fly-pattern Rob O'Reilly, owner of http://hipwader.com, sent me this link, thinking I'd be interested. I am! How many times have you been on a river or lake and seen gar cruising, sitting or sipping the surface and think nothing about fishing for them? I haven't really but have hooked them by accident- they are a hoot to land! So why not target them! Would be something different- and who knows, you might enjoy it.
Flysmallie Posted February 7, 2007 Posted February 7, 2007 Last year, fishing the James, I had a large gar follow me up stream. It stayed right behind my feet gobbling up everything that I kicked up with my feet. Finally I got curious and thought I would see if it would eat a streamer that I was using. I dropped it behind me and it ate it. Then it just sat there. And I just looked at it for awhile wondering how to get my fly back. I gave it a little nudge with my foot and it moved away slowly. And that's when it felt the tension of the line . It shot upstream like crazy. Had me into the backing in no-time. This fish was probably 4 feet long nose to tell. I was really relieved when it finally released me.....cut line. It was quite a rush. I have no idea what I would have done if I would have actually landed the thing. This is one of those moments when I realize how dumb I am sometimes. Hey ya'll watch this!!!
jjtroutbum Posted February 7, 2007 Posted February 7, 2007 When I was in my teens we used to get out on the Big River and find a nice gravel bar or beach light up a big bonfire set a few rods out for cats and occasionally the light of the fire, phases of the moon, really I haven't the faintest idea but there would be a large gathering of small bait fish and some large gar that couldn't resist some frayed anchor rope skated across the service. To remove them I just beached em gently used a paddle pry to open that toothy mouth a lil kept in the boat and pliers to pull the rope loose. Terry Beeson Posted February 7, 2007 Posted February 7, 2007 Growing up on a cattle farm, I found out frayed baling twine would get gar interested and you needed no hook... The toughest fight I've ever had was with a five foot long gar on a light rod, Zebco 33, and 8 lb line... He snapped the line just as I got him on the bank. On a fly rod? WOW!! I'm game!
