Ham Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 I went fishing down at Buffalo City. The app for checking real time release data is on the fritz. If I had known how much water was being released, I likely would have stayed home. I truly believe that <10,000 CFS the White River Zig Jig is the best lure day in, day out for trout. Today at >20,000 CFS, almost any other lure in the world was almost as good as the Zig Jig. I caught one small Largemouth bass. That's it. I missed two bites and had a trout follow my jig to the boat. I found small areas with less flow and I expected to catch fish, but I did not. I really stunk it up today. I did at least have the sense to get off the water before fog developed. I might wait until there is a lot less generation before I try again. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. Members Mac's Orphan Posted August 9, 2015 Members Posted August 9, 2015 ...but a bad day fishing is better than a good day at work! I feel your pain - frustrating it is!! If I'd known I was gonna live this long, I would have taken better care of myself...
rps Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 I have not fished in that stretch for over 15 years. Your post reminded me how much I enjoyed.
Ham Posted August 9, 2015 Author Posted August 9, 2015 I had this great idea that I could find areas that were not completely overwhelmed by feet of fast flowing water. I was wrong. I finally got to throw those 1/4 oz jigs I've been toting. They got down, but found wood. Over and over and over. 1/8 oz jigs just got blown away. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. Terrierman Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 Did you try a countdown or husky jerk? Husky jerk is a great trout stickbait. IMHO
Ham Posted August 10, 2015 Author Posted August 10, 2015 I knew I only had a couple of hours. To my shame, I let my scoutmaster Norman Carter down. I was not prepared. I did not have a jerkbait rod. I also did not have a couple of other options that I should have had onboard. I'll do better. I'm somewhat hard headed. I'll go again soon, but I think I'll go to a different spot. hoglaw Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 You've caught 10,000+ trout on jigs in that river. You know you can catch them on jigs. Why not use the high water as an opportunity to jerkbait fish and maybe catch some good ones? My skin is crawling I'm so anxious to get over there and fish hoppers, streamers, and jerkbaits in big water. You're living in it and still throwing JIGS?????!!!! Ham 1

Jerkbaits are a lot harder on the fish as well. I've caught several Big Browns on jerkbaits and seen others caught on them so it's not like I don't know the potential. I am using the high water to learn how to fish areas during high water, but when I have a FULL day, I'll likely go somewhere else. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future.
