mjk86 Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 Do you like using braid over flourocarbon? It will get deeper but I would think it could carry vibrations through the lime such as boat noise, etc. I typically use my big engine for trolling vs trolling motor. But I do use both for trolling. Flickers seem to be more effective around 2mph or more. At least they do for me. I do, but probably just cuz thats what im used too. I love metered braid, and I have "limited but positive" experience with metered leadcore. I use my outboard for trolling also, usually 2-3.5mph. If I could fish all the time id probably experiment more with different lines, but I instinctively use what i know works for me. I usually do tie a fluoro leader on when i start trolling...but inevitably i break it off and am too lazy to retie it on the water.
jerry241 Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 Mjk what kind of metered braid are you using?? I just ordered some 20lb power pro depth hunter to see what I think I've never used metered line but like the idea
Lance34 Posted September 10, 2015 Author Posted September 10, 2015 How about those Off Shore Tackle Company tadpole divers? Anybody try these out? By the dive chart on their website a 1oz diver on 10# mono will get a lure down to 28 feet with 150 feet of line out going at a speed of 1.5mph. Don't know how well that would work with my setup using BnM PST rods though, but others on the board it might be option.

J-Doc Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 I would say that when using braid for trolling, you have to turn the drag way down if you're targeting crappie because braid has zero stretch. Flourocarbon is supposed to have zero stretch also but it is just a bit softer than braid. mjk86: Are you using a flour leader on your braid or tying directly to the baits? I would think a flouro leader would be needed. Need marine repair? Send our own forum friend "fishinwrench" a message. He will treat you like family!!! I owe fishinwrench a lot of thanks. I would think a flouro leader would be needed. Precision trolling suggests using a braid with a long moderate/slow action rod. The zero stretch is needed for having almost 200 ft of line out, but the floppy rod absorbs much of the strike impact. That book is probably not too current as it makes no mention of the new copoly or hybrid type lines though. Agree 100% about the low drag, also saves you when you get snagged. Ya, i tie a fluoro leader (alberto knot) to the braid, then a snap swivel to the leader. Typically though, after an hour or two ill get snagged and it will break off, then i just tie a snap directly to the braid (out of laziness) and havent really noticed a difference between the two.
J-Doc Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 I wonder if you get your baits to a deeper depth with braid. Like more than 1ft deeper between the two (flourocarbon and braid). I like braid and I use it often but I have not tried trolling with it. I would think it could transfer boat noise down the line. Need marine repair? J-Doc Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 Ha! You're not the only one! Yeah I'd just assume stay at home vs. tying leaders to braid. I just hate tying leaders...... Lance34 Posted September 12, 2015 Author Posted September 12, 2015 Thanks for all the information y'all have shared on different line choices. Got out today and got start around 11:30 and starting shutting it down around 3. Water temp 80-81, wind HARD!, cloudy to partly cloudy. Started way down river and headed up river and just let the wind push me. Pulled size 7 pearl and black/silver flicker shad and also one white bandit 300 over flats ranging from 19-25 FOW with my lines out the side at 80-100 feet. Caught 3 good keeper size crappie, 2 bass and 2 cats. Only one cluster all day today and no lost lures this trip. Still no wall hanger though. Here's some pics. Dan the fisherman 1
