Fish24/7 Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 WT 80-81 678.14 and falling Saturday bass fished 6:30am to 5:30pm above hwy 160 bridge. Sunny, nice breeze all day. Water had good color to it. Caught a couple nice smallmouth, lots of spots, and short largemouth.. Had a pretty good spinnerbait bite going early for short largemouth on windy gravel flats. They came 5' or less and in the brush. As the sun got higher I was getting bit a little deeper in 8-10' on a lipless crankbait and swim jigs fishing them through the brush on flats adjacent to sharp drop offs, and for the bass suspended just off the wind blown points in 5-10fow. over deeper water. Threw a deep diving crank along the edge of a very long brush line on a mud flat in 20-24 fow and caught a few more keeper spots doing that. Ended the day with 21 keepers ,19 of those were spotted bass, 2 were 16" brownies. Dozens of short lmb and short kentuckies too.. So many short fish today I lost count after 30 something .Saw big schools of shad and fingerling bass everywhere I fished. All were released. 9/20 677.74 Sunday fished from 8:30-2:30pm, above the bridge again. Very little wind, overcast sky..Tried shallow with a topwater and spinnerbait, for about 30 minutes where I found them early the day before..not a bite, Fished the sharp drops, points, and deep brush lines that were producing the day before,.not happening. Time for a new game plan. I tied on a 1/2 oz jig w/ plastic chunk and started pitching it at a channel bluff and got bit on my second or third pitch. It was a keeper spot. Got nine more keeper bites pitching that jig, all kentuckies 12-14".,and more short bass. They wanted that jig deadsticked after the initial fall. They wouldn't bite it if it was moving. Turned the boat around and went right back down the same bluff throwing a lipless crank parallel to the bank in 5-8fow and caught a couple more keepers and even more short fish. So I moved across the lake to another bluff ,but it didn't produce. I wanted to try flipping jigs to shallow hard wood(stumps.laydowns, standing trees ect).. Well that worked too, but all I could catch was short largemouth, and more small kentuckies. I saw some really nice largemouth blasting through bait balls in the super shallows, but there's no way you could get your lure to them behind all this brush. Went back to the first bluff again, backed off the bank a ways, tied on a deep diver, and cranked the 10-15 zone over deeper water, yep I got bit, more small spotted bass, lol . Put the deep divers away and went back to fishing shallow only this time looking for ditches and subtle depth changes on mud flats while using the lipless crank. Plenty of shad around. Caught nothing but short lmb, and more kentuckies. Wound up with 15 keepers on the day, all of them spotted bass, and about 30 shorts, spotted and lmb.. . All released. Fish24/7 Posted September 21, 2015 Author Posted September 21, 2015 forgot to mention there is more room to launch again above the bridge with places for a few rigs to park
marcus Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 nice report sounds like u had a fun weekend keep it up
Bluff-Bassin Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 Made it out monday and fished above the bridge. I had all but forgot what the parking lot looked like at the bridge. Your right... Thousands and thousands of these little buggers in the shallows. I guess that speaks well for our lakes future and makes me feel a tad better about this miserable high water year. Did manage one solid one on a jig and a few keeper spots to go with.
Fish24/7 Posted September 23, 2015 Author Posted September 23, 2015 man that is one fat bass! i bet she pulled hard too
Fish24/7 Posted September 23, 2015 Author Posted September 23, 2015 Yep, there are thousands of fingerling bass swimming around. I took a short boat ride from Theodosia area down to pt 13 and back last night. I didn't fish, was just looking around. I saw hundreds of shad balls on top all the way down there and back. Nothing chasing them. I don't remember seeing this many shad ever.. Talked to a guy who fished yesterday morning. He was on a good topwater bite, no lmb, but lots of kentuckies 12-14". I think he was in Spring Creek, but not for sure. Saw another fisherman loading his boat. He had caught some big crappie on minnows about 20' deep he said.
mojorig Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 High water years are great for the fish!! If we didn't have them on Bull, it would......I don't even want to think about that, lol!!
