Stump bumper Posted October 11, 2015 Posted October 11, 2015 I hope it wasn't Vanish, that stuff always snaps on me. I have had brand new lines throw a top water clean across the lake before I had a chance to even think about getting a crimp. That is what made me go almost entirely to braid, last years no worries, no replacing, just don't back lash. But to each his own everyone has their favorites and nothing wrong with that. Better luck next time. RyanG 1

RyanG Posted October 11, 2015 Posted October 11, 2015 It was a mix of p line Florocarbon and some mono, either suffix or something else I can't quite remember. But all line is off the reels so it's gonna change haha. Thanks though guys for the input!

But all line is off the reels so it's gonna change haha. Thanks though guys for the input! I try and replace mono about every fourth trip. A big spool is so cheap it's worth it. Hook line and sinker has the bass pro stuff. About $10 for 1000 yards. Braid is on a number of my rods and definitely lasts the longest. I often use either mono or floro leaders on the braid. Double uni, 13 wraps on braid side, 5 on floro/mono side. I don't recommend the red box Seagar floro. Bad experiences. Yellow box, Invizx is good. My two cents. Champ188 and RyanG 2
RyanG Posted October 11, 2015 Posted October 11, 2015 I'll be stopping by hls to check that out, that's a good amount of line for 10 bucks. Especially for a broke college kid. Haha. Thanks for the tips though!
M_Taylor Posted October 12, 2015 Author Posted October 12, 2015 Haha I hear that. Wasn't too far back that I was there too. I just looked and it's actually 1,500 yards! I get the clear. Another tip on the topic of pinching pennies. Spool up about half your reel with cheap mono and then tie on your braid or floro. If you aren't trolling or striper fishing, you really aren't going to use more than your longest cast plus a little extra for break offs, etc. One spool of braid will go twice as far. Instant savings of about $20. Champ188 and RyanG 2
Champ188 Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 Good tip, M_Taylor. I leave about 1/3 a spool of old backing on all my reels ... maybe closer to a half with smaller line. The Bass Pro Shops Excel line is very good mono. I use it almost exclusively and like the green tint. The 17-pound is great for spinnerbaits and topwaters and I like the 10-pound for cranking. For jerk baits I use 8-pound P-Line CXX mono. Also, agreed on the Red Label Seaguar. Bad experiences for me. For my money, the best valule in fluorocarbon lines is the Cabela's 100% Fluorocarbon. It's about half the price of the premium FC lines and performs just as well for me. RyanG and Dan the fisherman 2
RyanG Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 That's what I'll be doing! Thanks again for the insight!
Dan the fisherman Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 Well all I use is triline, 100% floro on all the bait casters... I use nano phile for main line on open faces. And I use 14lb test on my top water. Never had a problem either. Hope that helps
