Seth...I think you have just hit one of the "genericisms". 

Most of us still call it split shotting because we know what it means in terms of set up. Usually it is rigged using 1/8-1/4oz weight, either mojo cylinder type, small egg, etc. I use a football shape because it seems to come through rocks better for me. Stop it with a rubber peg or plastic c-rig stop (not a big fan of those, think they scuff up your line pretty badly).

Once in a while I see one of Pete Wenners' reports where he shows an actual spilt shot. It works, but I haven't used one for many years.
