Members Fat Cat Posted May 31, 2016 Members Posted May 31, 2016 I switched a couple rods to 20 lb braid. used palomar knots and still broke off on hook set? I broke off once at the rod tip. My son noticed some thing wrong with the guide. He thought it was cracked it think it a groove worn in the guide? what am i doing wrong here. Love the feel but not loosing jigs.
Old plug Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 That situation is almost unavoidable. That condition with braid is why it gets hooked on dock cables so easy. It is just more abrasive than it feels.
dan hufferd Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 I like the braid that has a coating on it. Also make sure you are not using the old plastic(or what ever they were) lined guides. There is always a trade off. I only use 10lb braid I when down from 15 but it is coated with something slick it help protect it. So far so good
nomolites Posted May 31, 2016 Posted May 31, 2016 Replace the rod tip. That was actually probably damaging all of your line to some extent but the smaller diameter braid just got down into the jagged stuff. To Plug's point, it does not fare well with sharp objects where flourocarbon holds up best. You can run braid on steel cables or dock structures all day long as long as they are clean and in good shape but rusty sharp stuff will nick or cut braid faster than it will flouro. Mike
Members walleyeguy Posted May 31, 2016 Members Posted May 31, 2016 some rod guides won't work with braided line. it wears in and causes a slot which will cut the braid. How I know this is been there and done it. dan hufferd 1
