I am wanting to get ready for stripers and am looking at the New Yellow bird side planners. I got one of the mini yellow birds and it was junk, it could not pull a crappie jig without sinking, snagged a tree, the line broke and it sank to the bottom.

The new Yellow Birds look flat and I don't know if they would float with a six inch gizzard shad they won't be of use to me. Walmart.com is selling the New Yellow Birds of $18 a piece so that makes them had to pass up, but I don't want to throw away $40 to a pair if they don't work.

Has anybody bought the new ones or know someone that has.

They are twice as much, what makes them worth it?

They perform better in about all conditions.  Keel weighted and won't flop over and ride true in all water conditions.  They are worth more money if you regularly use boards but they are pricey.

I think I'm gonna buy a couple. I noticed there is the OR12 which I found best price with shipping on Amazon at $38.00 or do I need the SST Magnum which is $50 plus shipping? Do you generally run 2 planers boards or 4?

Also, is there any other accessories I need to purchase or do the units come complete and ready to go?

Running two is hard enough if you are alone in the boat, but two people on a day when the bite is slow 4 would be nice. 2 Stripers at once is hard enough for me though, the most I have had on is three and I only landed two.

Making tight turns by yourself isn't fun if you are running lines near the boat also.

OR12s are what you want.  The standard clips work fine for mono or flouro but you need to take a wrap around the top half if you use braid to keep them from slipping in rough water - OR you can purchase the adjustable clip made for braid.  For walleye or crappie I rig with a double clip so they stay put.  For striper I rig to slip on the strike and ride freely on the line; I put a large swivel in the line 8' or so above the bait so it will stop the board from sliding all the way to the fish accidentally before I can remove it. IF you will be using 10-20# braid with a slip setup you should get the adjustable clips or they will release prematurely.   This is what I have found works best for my style of fishing; I don't always use boards but some days when the fish are spooky the only lines that will get bit are the boards out away from the boat....

Good info, thanks. Can those same size boards be used for crappie or should smaller boards be used?
