It really helps with the loading and unloading. Just get the bow of the boat on the arm and push it up on to the rack.

I also have one of those on my truck, it works swell with the canoe.  With the yak if i put it bottom down, it slips off, cracks a truck windshield,(that's experience not theory)  if i place top down it will not slide over.  Like I said earlier, I must be doing something wrong. But sure handy loading canoe on 3/4 ton 4x4.
