moguy1973 Posted September 9, 2016 Posted September 9, 2016 I snapped my Berkley Amp rod this summer and I'm in need of another. I can go back with that rod, although it's the 2nd one I've snapped. I like them though because they are sensitive and they make them in 2 piece so I can store it in the cab of my truck easier. 2 piece isn't really a big deal though as I have another 2 piece spinning rod if I need to keep it in my truck. I'd like to keep the price under $60 or so too. I know it's tough to find a good rod for that price. Any suggestions? -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
J-Doc Posted September 9, 2016 Posted September 9, 2016 Easy answer. H20 Ethos Rod from Academy. About as light and almost as sensitive as a Gloomis. I know because I've held both side by side and fished boton on a drop shot side by side. I've snapped a few (my fault) and Academy just replaces them so keep your receipt. Price. Under $60 if you find one on sale or clearance. Otherwise they are right in that range of $60. I've had about 3 or 4 for about 4-5yrs now. Replaced only 2 and both were replaced for free. moguy1973 Posted September 9, 2016 Author Posted September 9, 2016 I'll have to check that one out when our Academy finally opens here in St. Louis. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
J-Doc Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 You can order it online as well. Google some reviews on them. I really like all of the H20 line. Need marine repair? drew03cmc Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 What length do you prefer? I'm liking my Fish Eagle 50 from Cabelas, but they aren't sub-$60 but once or twice a year. Andy
moguy1973 Posted September 10, 2016 Author Posted September 10, 2016 6-6 to 7'. I went ahead and bought one of the Ethos from Academy. If I don't like it I'll take it back when the store opens next month. All the websites I went to people had high praise for it like J-Doc said. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
J-Doc Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 I wouldn't steer you wrong. I don't have any stock in Academy. Although should as much as I have bought from them. Lol Need marine repair? moguy1973 Posted September 15, 2016 Author Posted September 15, 2016 Got my Ethos in today. A little longer and a little stiffer than the Berkley Amp I'm replacing. It'll take a little to get used to but it seems like a nice rod and it's pretty well balanced with the Abu reel I have on it. I like the Fuji guides, feel really smooth. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
J-Doc Posted September 15, 2016 Posted September 15, 2016 I've used them from drop shot to shakey head to jerk baits. The action is stiff enough for most finesse techniques yet soft enough or small crankbaits and such. I felt it had a good overall action. Need marine repair? I floated today and probably lost 15 fish today after I hooked up with them. I was swinging for the fences on the hook set and it seems like it wasn't staying loaded up on them enough and they would come off. Dunno, could have been my hooks as just started using a new kind. Seemed to work fine when I started using the tubes on my bait caster on a med-heavy rod. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
