Guest
I got out to the Spring River at about 10:00 AM and it was a balmy 23 degrees. There were a couple of guys fishing near the hatchery outflow. Otherwise, the place was deserted. I started out fishing a 1/16 ounce Zig Jig, and I caught my first 5 trout on the jig... But, I didn't feel like the water was quite right for jig fishing this trip, so I switched to an in-line spinner, and I started to catch more trout. I went down about 1.5 miles from Dam 3, fishing the pools and riffles. I ended up landing 36 trout (22 rainbows and 14 Browns). Most of the Rainbows were typical stocker size, but I did have one Rainbow that was right at 14". The Browns ran up to 15.25", with the majority of them between 12 and 15". I was surprised to catch that many Brown Trout on the Spring River. The only other time I've fished here, I landed one Brown. I ended up fishing until dark, and the warmest it got was 30 degrees. My guides on my rod constantly iced up throughout the day, but a quick dunk in the warmer spring water would clear them out quick. It was definitely a cold trip, but I had more fun than sitting on my couch.
Ham
I've never caught a Brown there. Good deal Man! Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
Gavin
Browns are either on the feed or off. Glad you had a good trip! A jerkbait would up the size on the Browns when they are on. Won't catch many rainbows on one, and usually on back hook if a rainbow eats a jerkbait. Browns crush the front hook mostly unless the size, depth, and cadence is wrong. Guest
Yeah, I've fished jerkbaits for trout and have caught good sized Browns on them... But, to my knowledge, the Spring River is not really known for producing numbers of Browns, and I was just looking to get off the couch and catch some Rainbows.... So, I brought a bunch of jigs and in-line spinners.... You can still catch good size trout on in-line spinners, and I've caught Browns and Rainbows >20" fishing them. DainW
Thanks for the report sounds like a good day. I fished the spring for the first time a few weeks ago. I and a question about wading downstream at dam 3. I heard the fishing gets really good downstream, but how do you get there? Can walk down the bank opposite the train tracks or is that private? Guest
There is private property along the banks in certain areas downstream of Dam 3, and in those areas just wade in the stream and hug the bank.
