Jacob McIntosh Posted January 26, 2017 Posted January 26, 2017 What are some of the flys that you guys would recommend for winter fish.
fishinwrench Posted January 26, 2017 Posted January 26, 2017 My #1 fly everywhere that trout live is a Leech, either mohair or pine squirrel. They'll eat it drifted, stripped, on the swing, or hanging in the current below you. Sizes 12-6 (small mohairs in clear water, larger squirrel fur ones in water with some color). Olive, Amber, or Tan.
Jacob McIntosh Posted January 26, 2017 Author Posted January 26, 2017 I'm still pretty green to fly fishing do I work the fly or will the current do all my work for me
fishinwrench Posted January 26, 2017 Posted January 26, 2017 The answer to that is Yes. Each holding area that you fish is different and each fish has a different attitude. Once a fish has refused your fly, don't show it to him the same way again.
trythisonemv Posted January 26, 2017 Posted January 26, 2017 Depends on the fly and the water. Typically l dead drift it through the current seams when I'm using leeches or buggers. After dead drifting a couple times I will actively retrieve with short strips on the bugger and soft jig ana leech. If you are fishing crane look up Czech nymph style. Its killer down there. Even if you don't use a sighter. Also try prince nymph and pheasant tail duo. Long leader and stealthy approach.
