Dan the fisherman Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 Got out today for a bit. Couldn't find shad in PC so I thought I'd pull cranks and umbrellas. Lucky I ran into Vinsott and he hooked me up with a couple dozen shad. Thanks bud! I head south towards the rivers and notice immediately when I got there that the water was 55. I saw lots of marks up there, but not big ones. I trolled around and it wasn't long before I hooked up to a hand full of whites, a 20" walleye and several short crappie. I know it's not the official day of spring yet but with walleye and whites in the rivers and all the pleasure and wake board boats out today it sure feels like it's arrived. Good luck out there fellas and stay safe. zarraspook, Lance34, dan hufferd and 6 others 9
Stump bumper Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 Indian Summer (probably not a correct term anymore) can be a disaster for young plants, fish and animals. I have seen this before with 70s in Feb then below zero and 22 inches of snow in late March. It kills the fruit, the fish spawn too early and the fry die. I was really wanting a good cold Feb and a good shad kill, but I hope we don't have a really hard freeze after this one. Glad you got into some walleye, I am afraid the stripers may have headed back home to the North and gone deep really early. I saw the guide boats coming out of the river Saturday and nobody looked happy. We can only wait and see. dtrs5kprs 1
dtrs5kprs Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 Did that in 2007 if I remember correctly. Early warm up, then big cold in April.
Guest Posted February 22, 2017 Posted February 22, 2017 the 2007 freeze killed the acorn crop & the 2009 ice storm wiped them out. I like the low water. You cant have high water every year.
Members Alumacraft190 Posted February 22, 2017 Members Posted February 22, 2017 Dont even start talking about the fish going north already! Im due in towards end of March. Had a succesful trip a year ago same time in horseahoe bend area with the high water/mudline, would like to think we will do the same only a bit further south this go round. This comes after a November trip that saw me anticipating a mid lake bite but in reality my most successful day was at point 5, lol. So I suppose its par for the course.
Ozark Flyer Posted February 22, 2017 Posted February 22, 2017 Fished up in the river today....came out with my frown face on. No birds, a few scattered fish on the graph but found no big schools. Looking for plan B. Good news is the crappie fisherman were all smiles.
