Dutch Posted March 25, 2007 Posted March 25, 2007 It is a Corps ramp there at Walnut Springs (formerly Asher's Cane Bottom). The public can use it just like the one at Pebble Beach but with any size motor at all it is no problem to make the run from Bridgeport or Flat Creek up to Asher's and there are a lot of good spots between them. There are also launching places at McCord's Bend and Rolly Blunk's. Both will put you closer to the spawning grounds which are normally from Taylor's Shoal on up to ????.
Sam Posted March 25, 2007 Posted March 25, 2007 Tightline, I think you're right. The long straight north-to-south stretch with all the stumps in it is what we call Ashercane Bottom. It has a dock and a ramp about midway on the west side, but those are for the residents of the big new houses in that development. It's just as easy to launch at "Charlie's" private ramp at McCord Bend for $2, or for free at Bridgeport a few miles downstream. Going upstream from Ashercane, where the river takes a sharp turn to the east and there's a long straight stretch going toward McCord Bend - that's what we call Long Camp. I never have figured out where Walnut Springs is, though. I wish someone would tell me.
Seth Posted March 25, 2007 Posted March 25, 2007 What you guys are calling Ashercane Bottoms is what I have always called Walnut Springs because of along it up to the boat ramp. I always thought Ashercane bottoms was the area below what you all are calling Ashercane bottoms, like I marked on my maps. What do you all call the big L-shape area, below what you all call Ashercane Bottoms, that I marked on my map?
Dutch Posted March 25, 2007 Posted March 25, 2007 I was there when it was owned by Asher's and they had cane all along the river bottom. The old man used to have a coffee can for you to put a dollar in before you drove across his farm to fish.
Tightline Posted March 25, 2007 Author Posted March 25, 2007 I remember that coffee can too.Seth the locals use to call that L shaped area Carr Bottoms, but its been years since I've heard it called that,no telling what its called now.
Sam Posted March 25, 2007 Posted March 25, 2007 From this discussion, I'm starting to think Asher Cane Bottom and Walnut Springs are one and the same? I put my boat in there a couple of times a few years ago, when there was no concrete ramp and it was just a gravel beach. I quit doing that when a fellow came down and told me it was a private access for the owners of houses in that neighborhood only. To get to that launch point you go though a neighborhood of nice houses, a "development". Since the name "Walnut Springs" keeps popping up, I'm wondering if that's the name of that residential neighborhood? I never noticed, but the name may be on a sign at the entrance. And since the ramp is now concrete, it may very well be a Corps ramp and public now because of that. If it is, I didn't know it. But it'll always be Asher Cane Bottom to me. The next hole downstream, the L-shaped one - we still call that Carr Bottom.

Seth Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 So Ashercane and Walnut Springs is the same thing and Carr Bottoms is what I originally thought was Ashercane Bottoms. I've never heard of anybody mentioning Carr Bottoms before since I've been snagging their, but I guess I know that now.
