Hatchery

How long will it take for the Hatchery to get up and producing trout for stocking?

All I have seen is some damage reported. No specifics as to extent.

The report I read on this site stated that the hatchery was demolished. I believe demolished meant that all of the fish, Fingerlings, stockers, and brood stock were washed away. I assume what eggs they had were destroyed as well. The troughs or pools are probably OK but the pumps could be damaged. I wish I could take the time to run down and see for myself but that is unlikely. And they probably don't need gawkers anyway.

I tried searching for some info, but didn't find much.  Also curious about the hatchery at Meramec.  I know the building there had about 2 feet of water in it.  I'm sure at some point we'll see an official report or something from MDC, but I'm guessing right now they still have their hands full

Meramec does not hatch, they just hold and raise trout from other places.  Montauk and Bennett hatch and raise. 

The only report I could find was the Salem paper had a blurb about damage to campground and some hatchery damage.  Mo State Park web shows the park closed thru May 8 due to flood damage.

Looking at the Facebook page, people are still fishing at Montauk.  One pic shows the runs by the Mill flooded.  No mention of major damage I can see.

When I spoke to the hatchery worker down there a couple of years ago he stated that the Montauk hatchery produced more trout than the hatchery at Taneycomo. The biggest damage to the fishery is the loss of all of the stock, fry, and breeders. They will, I assume have to buy trout until they can get up and running again. The big problem is, is flooding like this going to keep occurring? Two major floods in two years are getting expensive for the state.

It's getting expensive for the taxpayers, bkbying... 

 

Either way you look at it, it's a major hit to the system.  At some point you have to look at options to keeping the process sustainable and viable.

There should be no added taxpayer dollars unless the Feds kick in support money. MDC operates on a fixed sales tax plus license fees to fund their operation. 

Cleanup in the State Parks and Federal Rivers will cost us. 

Paying for all of the flood damaged homes and businesses will raise our insurance rates.

When I referred to the state I use it the term "state" meaning we the tax payer since we technically are the state.
