Wrench

I was down for a day and a half last Friday and sat morning. late Friday my for a brief period boat would not come out of the hole. I thought I had a coil go bad but it did not sound like it(I had one go bad about 2 years ago) it was almost like my vent plugs were clogged and the prop wouldn't spin over 2200 rpm. I figured my trip was done I was able to idle from buck creek to alhonna with out getting in the way of the boats that were out in the main channel. I figured I would try one more time and this time  it slowly got on plane and cleared out and ran like it is suppose to. I ran back and forth in workman about five times and it was like nothing happened, the motor never kicked any codes and after it cleared out it jumped on plane with no issues. Have you ever heard of anything like this. motor is a 2009 merchant optimal and a 98 champ 203. I run a 26 tempest thanks for any help.

Yeah I hear it all the time from Mercury owners.  Often it is from trimming the motor too far down, covering the exhaust relief ports with water.  Mercs don't have the low end grunt to overcome that slight bit of exhaust back pressure if the propping is on the steep side.  Most rigs are propped out for proper WOT RPM, but if it is sometimes sluggish coming out of the hole then you may need to open the prop vents or drop down to a 25P Tempest or Trophy.

An overheated compressor can kill the Optimax hole shot also, since you are driving a swelled piston that is doing nothing to enhance power.   That compressor is a torque thief.

It hasn't "gone away".   But if what you mean is, "Will it usually crawl out of the hole..... but sometimes not?" Absolutely.

This is why guys that insist on never sacrificing a single MPH year round have a Summer prop, and a Winter prop.

Wrench It has never had occurred before and I have run the same prop since I repowered. With the amount of debris in the water could one of the vent hole got plugged up? I guess I will never know the answer to that question.

If it is coming out of the hole normally then you don't have a problem....unless your definition of "normal" is different than mine.   Crawling slowly out of the hole is not normal/proper.  Pushing the boat quickly onto plane with some power to spare is what I like to see, and if fuel is fresh and all engine systems are doing their job properly then the only way to help the issue is with the rigging (engine height, engine trim angle, and prop design).

I had this problem once on a 91 Johnson 150 GT   But it was the timming base  It had a dead spot.  Sometimes it would run normal other times I couldn't get on plane.

I was in workman Saturday morning. In the white hydra sport. I keep seeing a bald eagle out there on the point. Seen him 2 weekends in a row.

By the way Glenn my starter is doing great thanks.

Ahh those were the days!   I miss the days when freeing up a sticky timer base could make me the hero for a day 😀

Life was so much simpler back then.

Glad she starts like it's supposed to now, thank YOU !  👍😋
