DADAKOTA Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 After reading Jim M's story about going in the lake I got to thinking that I should probably get one of the inflatable PFDs for my 88 year old Dad. His balance is pretty bad and it really worries me when he is on the dock or in the boat. Thinking he'd be willing to wear an inflatable full time. I know nothing about them. What brand would you all recommend?
rps Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 I am a full time vest wearer in the boat. The Onyx I have is very comfortable.

Kelroy Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 Having had much occupational exposure to inflatables, I would suggest that if you do decide to go that route, get one that has a pressure-activated inflator vs the infamous 'dissolving pill' design. While I appreciate the advantages an inflatable has to offer, I must also point out that one is basically taking an automotive-style airbag and wrapping it around their neck. Deployment can be sudden, loud, and abrupt, almost violent in nature; not the sort of thing I would recommend for someone near 90 years old, unless their heart is in very good health. Not much good if the PFD itself causes a heart attack.
rps Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 This is the model I have although I paid considerably less for it. www.onyxoutdoor.com/c/flotation_fishing-and-hunting-vests
176champion Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 I have an Onyx also and it goes on before i get in boat and stays on till i get off the boat......I have heard rumors of the Onyx going off in your rod locker due to moisture since i believe it is of the pill dissolve design...the mustang i believe is of the pressure activation design......Onyx cost 17 - 20 bucks to rearm and mustang cost 40 to 50 bucks to rearm. I know everything about nothing and know nothing about everything! Bruce Philips
shrapnel Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 I wear an Onyx as well, I think 89.00 at Academy. You don't even know it's on I forget about it almost every time I get out of the boat and have to walk back to take it off.
