DChance Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 The bad just gets worse..... What was originally thought to just be a replacement powerhead job had turned into and entire motor replacement....apparently when the piston went, reeds and reed plate were broke, metal made its way through and did plenty of damage.... So.....my options? Dealer said Certified pre-owned program, pacemaker program, or new were the options.guess at this point, anything is an option. I was quoted for a replacement opti. Is that the way to go or do I now look into possible 4 stroke? whats the cost difference? worth it? I am at a loss at what to do right now. Hate to have to spend this money for a luxury, but it needs to be fixed. new boat is not an option, don't want that note to carry.
Seth Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 Better sell that Kubota and get you a new outboard. The good thing about a new motor is you won't have to worry about footing the bill for the next five years. If you can swing the payment, it's a great piece of mind. I know we all hate payments, but you can get in to a new motor for a fairly low monthly payment. I know it's not the most fiscally smart thing to do, but it sure beats not being able to go fishing when you want. Are you looking at a 150 or a 200? I forgot what you run on your boat.
Seth Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 @fishinwrench what is your opinion on this matter. You probably know more about all of this stuff than all of us on the forum combined.

J-Doc Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 If you do not want to sell/scrap the boat, as much as I hate to say this (because I hate the expression).......buy once cry once. Regardless of brand, get an outboard YOU are most familiar with and most confident in. Opinions are like a can of worms. You'll hear horror stories on all brands. I've also heard incredible tales of maintenance free and incredible stories of "best motors ever". All from credible sources. At the end of the day, you're the one cutting the check and the one living with it. Do your own research and access it as best you can. I'm not familiar with the newer E-tecs the "big 3" of outboard manufacturers all make good products. Why your motor blew is specific to your motor. I've also heard of 3 blown Evinrudes from one local angler several years ago. Probably under propped and bad setup to blow 3 motors on the same boat.... If you buy a new motor and plan on keeping it for years, get what you want. If you plan on buying a used motor to sell the boat, get what you can and cut bait. terryj1024 1 Need marine repair? I don't hate Merc's, I love them. I make exactly 86% of my living working on them. What I hate is the way Mercury Marine Corp. operates as a business. I'm not gonna publicly comment on this because I know who is doing the diagnostics and I've already PM'd Dchance about my faith in them, and the reason why. I've never seen a piece of aluminum go down the exhaust housing and destroy it. I'd have to see that.
Members D.W. Verts Posted February 22, 2018 Members Posted February 22, 2018 Bullspit on the damage to the lower unit from a motor part. Destroyed? No way. fishinwrench 1

I went 2-stroke when I bought my current rig because you advised against 4-stroke. I listened. I very much value your opinion also. Otherwise I wouldn't have you as a reference in my signature. fishinwrench, terryj1024, cheesemaster and 1 other 3 1 Need marine repair? Send our own forum friend "fishinwrench" a message. Seth Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 I love my Etec, but I hate having that darn oil tank in the bilge area. I'd be able to fit another battery in there and have a 36v trolling motor if it weren't for that thing. Maybe Cowtown and Outboard Jets will get the Etec G2 jet lined out by the time I decide I want to upgrade. The G2 has the oil reservoir in the cowling.
